RANT! whats with people driving up your rear?

just came back from sainsburys and im slowing down for the roundabout, not braking just engine braking and this pos beat up focus comes flying up behind me and slams his brakes on at the last moment and then proceeds to follow me nearly all the way home about 2-3ft off my bumper.

now i must admit that because he was so close to my bumper to begin with i decided to not give in to him and speed but infact i did the opposite, i slowed down, maybe not the best move but he didnt try and overtake when he could have easily and safely and he didnt back off. so i carried on at 30mph in both the 60mph limited section and then 30mph in the 40mph section and then to be on the safe side with me living on a busy estate i slowed to 20mph even though its still legal to do 30mph.

i will not give in to these people who enjoy sniffing my fumes.

Just ignore and drive as normal. No need to provoke a reaction by driving slower.

yes if you just read that bit but you will see why i did that if you read the whole post...

No I did, I really did.

Just because someone is driving like that, means you go out of your way to slow down and start this fannying around business whilst inconveniencing yourself ( yes yes I know you wern't inconveniencing yourself etc.)

A good driver would just completely ignore the person and carry on driving as per the norm like nothing was wrong.

I had this on the M6 in heavy rain the other week. An Audi appeared right behind me so close to me that I couldn't even see his lights.

I was in the right lane overtaking cars in the left and middle lanes and there was another car in front of me. Eventually the Audi driver decides he can't bear to wait a few seconds so as the car in the middle lane moves over to the left, Mr Audi decides to go for the undertake. Except that didn't work as the car in front of me then moved over to the middle lane therefore blocking his undertake.

I'm then overtaking two more cars in the middle lane with Mr Audi about 3cm from me so I of course slow down as I'm far from comfortable with this. I was slowing down merely to the speed limit as I may have been a few mph over 70 - didn't even use the brakes, just eased off the accelerator. At the point I can move over I then do so. Of course the Audi driver wasn't happy with having to wait to get a car length ahead on HIS road so he then straddled both the middle and right hand lanes and slammed his brakes on. What an absolute ****. If I thought reporting him to the police would've achieved anything I would've definitely noted his plate down.

Funnily enough though I find that the vast majority of cars that drive irritatingly close to me are Audis. I'm sure this is no coincidence.

i slowed down at first to wind him up ,yes, but afterwards when i continued to be slow in the 60 zone it was to let him pass, anyone could have overtaken me, it was a clear straight road but he continued to drive up my arse so who is in the wrong? i even pulled more to the left to let him by

err he was trying to let the guy pass wasnt he ?

You think he drove the entire way home through 60 and 40 limits at 30 as a helpful gesture to try and let him past and not to try and make a nuisance out of himself in 'revenge'?

Pull the other one...

during the 60 section i was letting him pass but as he continued in the same manner i reverted back to driving slow yes. hate me for it if you wish but im not going to let some guy bully me into driving faster, even when i was doing the limit he was still right on my arse so it made no difference

Nothing gets my goat more.

Always blokes under 30, always underpowered superminis, transits or poverty spec Audi / BMW probably tied into a 10 year PCP.

I always slow down to the speed limit on the dot.

Through town I'm pretty much immune to idiots sitting 2mm off my bumper, unless they are in something decent I do enjoy leaving them in a cloud of diseasel fumes at the transition to nsl though. Amazing how many of these people continue to drive at the desired 40 everywhere

Well it did make a difference, it took you longer to get home at the absolute minimum.

Such a common occurrence that barely raises an eyebrow seeing someone a few feet away in the rear view. Definitely drive more cautiously though as they'll never brake in time in the event of an emergency stop so it makes sense to slow down a little bit. Seems to happen more on motorways, because nothing could every go wrong at 70mph driving as if it were the first corner at the Monte Carlo grand prix.

Could end up like the chumps I saw this weekend. A car in front of me tailgating one of those little box cars that elderly people tend to drive. Saw the two cars drive over what looked like leaves blowing in the wind, but as I got closer it turned out to be a gaggle of ducklings running around in the road. They managed to flatten the mother and several of the lings leaving the rest just running around aimlessly. Dunno if the car in front didn't brake because of the guy on his bumper, who in turn didn't brake because he couldn't see the road in front of him. Terrible sight :/

I have seen literally every type of road vehicle doing this - taxis, bikes, other cars....I normally ease off the gas and open up a bigger gap in front of me.

Just ignore it?

This, I may put my foot down if I want to stay in the fast lane, or I may pull in soon as I can - his tailgating is just a message, can't blame him as some people just don't get it when you follow at a normal distance.

Can't say I've ever experienced it on a normal (e.g. 30mph single carriageway) road.

I had some woman beeping at me on Sunday. I was in a small Cotswold village driving down a road with parked cars on one side (my side) over a slight brow and a cyclist was coming up the road.
Like you I was like WTF have some patience you stupid bint, I'm doing 20 in a 30, big deal, there are numerous hazards.
So she then tailed me whilst mouthing something (I can't lip read looking in a rear view mirror love, try harder)
Even the date / GF said "don't be pressured into speeding up" I looked at her, grinned and said "oh I wont" and slowed down a little more. :D thinking she'll overtake when the parked cars are passed and the road straightens up..

Nope... The bint pulls over about 45 seconds later and drops her passenger off. I **** you not. WTF is up with some people!
