RANT! whats with people driving up your rear?

A good driver would just completely ignore the person and carry on driving as per the norm like nothing was wrong.

Surely a good driver would adjust appropriately for the conditions? I.e. in this case ensuring that their speed was proportional to the braking distance of the other car in order ensure they were able to brake in time in the event of an emergency stop? If the other driver was leaving such a small gap, then the OP had no choice to but to drive at an appropriate speed. ;)

I had this just yesterday on my way to work, coming off the sliproad, cars stopped around 100 yards in front of me but some dozy tnuc in a clapped out fiesta is inches off my bumper.

Now the brakes on my car should be a damn sight better then some X reg fiesta so does the fiesta driver not know or realise this?

When the traffic cleared I just drove off but Mr fiesta was just tootling along, probably trying to accelerate back up to bumper riding speeds?

Mostly they're stupid.

Just put something relaxing on the radio and drive as normal (albeit with a bigger stopping gap between you and the traffic in front to allow for them).

The really funny bit is these same people seldom make particularly good progress out in NSL or on the dual carriageway. So many of them are right up close through the 30 and then just fail to keep up through NSL.

My favourite this week: Some chump in a vectra overtaking me as I slowed for a 40 from NSL(there was traffic coming the other way mind you) on the approach to a roundabout with exits to a 30 and a dual carriageway. Either of which would be a bit pointless but he went for the 30 which was really speshul.

I used to get slow drivers in the inside but then all of a sudden I've not had an issue for months and every time I'm overtaking, the car in front moves in well in advance.

I've even had a few incidents last week where I'm driving in the middle lane and there's a car on the inside lane approaching to overtake us, he sees me approaching the car in front as my speed is greater than in in the middle lane and before I've even had time to indicate he flashes me to join the inside lane for my overtake so I indicate and do so. Strangely they were all Audi drivers too...lol?

A quick wave of thanks later and we're on our way.

Actually I have to say the last few months have been brilliant for driving up and down the M3/M25/M40 and M42 as well as most of the M6.

This^^.

Yes, it's childish but rather satisfying. :D

Jesus, you sound like a terrible driver.

No I did, I really did.

Just because someone is driving like that, means you go out of your way to slow down and start this fannying around business whilst inconveniencing yourself ( yes yes I know you wern't inconveniencing yourself etc.)

A good driver would just completely ignore the person and carry on driving as per the norm like nothing was wrong.

Pesilol, he slowed down for them to overtake. If some one is driving up my arse and there is chance for them to overtake, slowing down can help them. Rather an idiot in front than behind.

This cretin obviously was just tailgating for the hell of it.

Wading into a thread just to state he is a terrible driver is just a massive sweeping generalisation. I bet you drive like the angel gabriel all the time don't you?

Confession time - I nearly drove straight through a little 107 this morning, nsl dual carriageway with me pulling off from traffic lights and the 107 overtaking a truck up ahead - I accelerated away (tank nearly done, making "good" progress) fully expecting the pug to have finished passing and pulled in long before I got anywhere near. What he actually seemed to do was get alongside then sit at 40mph.

Guy must have thought I was a complete idiot as I rocketed up behind only to have to slow down again and wait. He may have had a point too, wonder if half the tailgaiters just aren't paying enough attention to what's going on around them.

While I believe tailgating is absolutely retarded, I think that drivers that are driving well under the speed limit have their issues.

If you're on the estate and see kids playing 50ft ahead of you then by all means - slow down.
But doing 20mph on a 30mph zone for no obvious reason is extremely annoying for other drivers. so is sitting at 65mph on the outside lane on the motorway, or a couple of cars driving at 30-40mph on a 60mph road while not leaving any gaps between them.

Driving at 30mph in a 60mph road to "teach people a lesson" is not something to be proud of at all, more so if the car behind you couldn't overtake because of ongoing traffic.

It seems to be the default driving position round here; sit less than a car's length from the car in front of you regardless of speed, weather, hazards, it's infuriating.

And, as always, I'll overtake the cloud-heads doing 45 in a 60 only to be tailgated by them in the next 30 or 40 limit, only to leave them for dust as soon as you hit the GLF signs again.

Then there are the long trains of morons all doing 45 a cars length from the car in front of them making it impossible to overtake, so you just have to sit at the back of the queue where you'll invariably soon get your own personal tailgater.

It seems to me that most drivers just pay so little attention to anything happening around them and just 'latch on' to the car in front, copy everything they do and not worry about the task of driving at all.

i cannot beleive how many posters say they dont understand tailgating

seeing as i appear to be the only driver on the road who doesnt insist in being inches from the bumper of the car in front, it surely must be most of you who do it

SO TELL ME WHYYY!

If you do this behind the trucks, you get ulta mpgz.

i have to admit i "slipstream" trucks to save fuel on long trips, the only issue is that if you cant see their mirrors they cant see you.

im not a perfect driver and no one can seriously think they are perfect

the way i react to people driving to close to me is too slow down, wether it be to let them pass easily or to wind them up this may make me a bad driver in the eyes of others but if the guy got too close and hit me id rather it be at a 30 than 60 regardless of my reason for going slow.

ill have to fill my screen wash up next time and spray him like a naughty dog

Maybe it's just me, but i don't ever seem to have many people behind me? Only in towns when everyone is doing 20 mph. If i ever do have anyone behind me it's in a 30mph/40mph limit where i am sticking to it (no thanks - i don't want a points, a fine and increase insurance premiums for the next 5 years because some cretin wants me to go quicker).

I normally give them the "small dot" treatment in that when going from the 30mph to 60 i make them into a small dot.

But yeh, tail gating is one of my most hated things.

small dot treatment is good, but i doubt it makes these people understand what theyre doing

they are probably posting on a forum now about they follow morons who insist on driving like nutters booting it everywhere.

i had one yesterday, they were in a silly little diesel engined merc, practically in the boot of my car as i went round a roundabout carefully because of an HGV on the nearside (who i didnt want to interface with)

he was so close i could see his face clearly, so i caught eye contact with him using a "are you a moron" sort of look and pinned it. small dot treatment ensued
