But its investing in another motherboard thats pretty much EOL now unless you get a cheap used one to do you over for now. I can see the attraction though if the uplift is above and beyond what the 9900k can do now.

I'd lose the term investing really, you can dump a brand new 5800X3D in a £50-60 AM4 B450 board and get the same features you have in the 9900K based Z390 give or take a few I/O options, and you'd end up making money on the Z370/390 board when you sell it, in fact you could probably swap to a 5800X3D + B450 after selling a 9900K/Z390 combo for less than £150, maybe less than £100. 9900K is still fetching nearly £300, some assume £230 for a quick(ish) sale and £100 for your board, again quick sale (assuming not a terrible board), you've got £330, so £409 for 5800X3D and £60 for a board, total £469 - £330 = £139.

Yeah im also considering AMD but since the 3D chips have just released, its gonna be awhile till they have anything to respond to Raptor lake i think. But you're right, ideally i want a board i can keep reusing and not have to upgrade every single generation!

My last AMD chip was a Phenom X4 955!

Zen4 is releasing around H2 2022 the same time Raptor Lake might as well wait and see what both offer, I dont know if Raptor Lake will be the last cpu supported for LGA1700 ?

AM5 might get few more cpu updates ? even better if it ends up like AM4

Hmm good point, i had to check prices just not to confirm it and the 9900k is still fetching silly money for some reason!

I have a Gigabyte Aorus Pro ITX board, basically one of the best ITX boards for that gen so i think i could sell that for a fair bit still.

It's very tempting when you put it that way!

Yeah Intel doesn't have a good history with supporting motherboards for longer than 1/2 generations, its also why im abit sceptical but having done it for so long its kinda the norm now.

AMD first has to beat Alder Lake (all around performance) with Zen4. Then There's Raptor Lake - which will presumably extend Intel's leadership 20-50% in most areas, due to 8 more cores, new architecture, new cache design etc.

As which will launch first, Raptor Lake or Zen4, that remains to be seen.

How many times have people told you dave, Raptor Lake is not a new architecture. If you would liek to make a wager happy to place a bet in front of all thse good witnesses that Zen 4 will beat RPL on IPC and in most benchmarks. Raptor Lake is nothing more then a refresh with a typical intel <10% improvement in performance

Just to add Intel are only adding 8 more e cores because they cannot make or fit more performance cores that will compete with AMD, Intels extra 6 e cores still equals 32 threads which is what Zen 4 will have

Has it been confirmed if Raptorlake will support DDR4 Z690 boards ? I know it'll support DDR5 Z690 boards but haven't heard too much about DDR4 compatibility.

Seems unlikely that it would change, but no, haven't seen it confirmed, not even which chipsets will work (e.g. 11th gen officially was not compatible with H410 or B460).

As far as I'm aware it'll work on 600 series boards but all the new 700 series will be DDR5 only and will possibly recieve meteor lake support down the line.

If I can simply do a bios update with my current Z690 DDR4 board and drop in a 13900K I'll do it, I hope Intel don't lock this out, That would be such a d-bag move.
I'm almost certain that will be the case especially given Intel now has some real competition so can't afford to upset customers.

If they do a lock out I expect it will be the same as 11th gen was (B660 / H610), but I think it was confirmed that they're technically compatible. That didn't make any difference to Intel's policy with 1151v1 and 1151v2 though.

From what I'm aware of, even 8th/9th gen still have DDR3 compatibility in their memory controllers, even though it was dropped way before.
