Hi Guys,

I posted in the forum pics of my new bike. I am suppost to be picking it up when the loan comes through some time next week.

Its a CBR 600 Y reg. I need some advice on security for it. Do you know what imobiliser comes as standard on these. The guy who I am buying it off doesnt really know.

It hasnt got an alarm either! What other methods do you recommend to keep insurance down and keep it safe?

For some reason it only has one key too? The guy said the previous owner had lost it? Do you know if these are expensive to replace?

Cheers

Sorry for my dumb post but this is my first bike so dont really know too much

Right then, as standard I dont think has an alarm but it does have an immobiliser.

Getting a key cut for one will be about £60 as it has a circuit inside it so only that key can start the bike, the security code in the circuit has to be replicated which is why it costs so much.

Fitting an alarm would give you peace of mind I suppose but it wont affect the insurance premuim much at all, and certainly not more than the alarm would cost anyway. I just anchor mine to the floor AND the wall in the garage when its home with a disk lock just for extra measure. I would like an alarm for mine but as I said they wil cost more than they would save in insurance.

Yep, chain it to something solid with a serious bit of chain and a good big lock. Also out of sight out of mind applies here so if you can hide it out of view this will also help

The way I see it is if I don't reckon I'd get through it myself with my tools then someone else isn't going to either :D

And he speaketh the truth.
Ive watched some "Sold Secure" and "Thatcham" approved chains cropped in about 10 to 15 seconds, these are chains costing over £160 and they didnt survive a 42" bolt cropper.
Almax chains are physically too big to go in portable hydraulic cutter heads and will survive 42" bolt croppers.

Those Almax chains are seriously amazing. Quite hefty to lug around though.

Fortunately I keep my bike in bricked garage over night which helps lower the premiums. I also have a couple of disc locks for when I'm out and about.

A good d-lock will fit in under the seat, and some are almost as tough as the almax chains and very worthwhile. Disc locks are good for a space saver idea. I found alarms to be problematic and unless you keep your bike outside for long periods of time they can be a pain. I ride and park in London and to be honest I've never been that worried about leaving it out.
