Maybe the guy let him through and decided to tailgate the police car to get through traffic. I have seen people do this.

I'm amused that people are using such ignorant phrases wailing and moaning about how the police took his life away etc. YOU DON'T KNOW THE FULL STORY! Jeez.

My understanding is that UK Police may exceed the posted speed limit in pursuit of their duties only if they use priorities. I'm happy to be corrected by a serving UK Police Officer, not some n00b on the net who thinks they know.

The RTA says that a police officer (and ambulance and fire drivers, but no-one ever seems to complain about them) does not need to obey the speed limits if engaged on police business. It does not define police business. In that absence, most (possibly all by now) have then defined what "police business" is. They may say for instance that driving to investigate a call form the public is police business, but travelling to interview a witness is not. My understand is that this list then becomes, for that force, legally binding. If an officer exceeds the limit whilst doing something on the "not" list then they do not have the exemption. Whether it goes to court is another question of course.

But my basic point remains the same: until we actually know what happened in this case I can't see how anyone with a brain can apportion blame to either party. All the guessing does is reveal prejudice.
