Reading literature - anyone else lost interest in the past few years?

I always find time to read on the way to work, it's only 15 minutes twice a day but I really look forward to it. Now I have a kindle and don't have to ration my books that I buy on trips to the UK I read more now that I ever have.
I have to say that the internet is ok for reading short articles and light reading in general but it only increases my desire to read more substantial real books.

Book reading is for girls !!!:p.

I haven't really touched books since leaving uni more than 4 years ago. As I have grown older I just find reading on the internet more exciting unless there is something really tricky related to my field, only then I consult a book. Otherwise I find book reading damn boring:mad:.

I was never a fan of fiction books and have only read 20 or so. But i have bought some economic books and i also do find that i will never spend a whole evening reading books. I will just spend it on the PC and the only time i read is on my commute on the train or on a trip away/holiday.

But reading non fiction can be similar to studying, but i find it interesting, i also have a load of books on computers and even videos, but i never spend the time to read the books. I said that if i had a kindle i would probably read more because then i could put all the computer ebooks i have on the kindle and i would not have to carry around a fat unix book with me.

I read chuck palahniuk books and hunter s thompson and i would like to read more fiction but there just seems so many books and information available these days i am kind of swamped for choice and some fiction novel is not at the top of my list.

I love reading and have done since I was a kid. While I like movies, I prefer books as it allows your imagination to come up with the picture rather than having the director dictate how he thinks it should look. Since Christmas I've read William Gibson's Pattern Recognition, Spook Country and Zero History. I'm 95% of the way through Bram Stokers Dracula at the minute. Before Christmas I got through William Gibson's Neuromancer, Count Zero, Mona Lisa Overdrive, Virtual Light, Idoru and All Tomorrow's Parties.

I go through phases where I'll read non-stop and other times where I'll only watch movies and really can't be bothered to read, but when I do get round to doing either it's almost an autistic level of focus to either task. I still have a stack of more than 15 films I've acquired for and since Christmas that I'm just not in the mood to watch as I'm mostly reading. When my mood shifts, I'll probably sit down and watch one or two films a night.

I got myself a Kindle for Christmas and was amazed just how quickly I fell in love with it. If you're a big reader it's a fantastic piece of kit. So far I've filled it with the free classics available from amazon (such as Dracula) that I've just never got round to reading before.

I've never been able to read books. I put it down to my depression/anxiety and reduced attention span.

I know there are great works of literature out there and I want to read them, but every time I open the book I get so frustrated I give up. I've found no way of curing it.

I find I need to find time when I can stop doing everything and have no distractions in order to enjoy a book. I carshare my journey to and from work and almost never drive, so I fit 30 mins each way per day of reading, then if its a good book I would usually carry on reading once I got home, it had to leave you anticipating otherwise you will lose interest.

last few years i got back into yhe work's of peter f. hamilton after rereading pandora's star and judas unchained, which i then followed with his new "void trilogy"all of them thoroughly good sci-fi reads.

Also read kevin j. andersons saga of seven suns, whilst i enjoyed it somewhat it is not on par with hamiltons work.

Time is obviously a big factor, but I haven't gone off reading at all. Gaming takes up a big chunk of my spare time, and it's always a juggling act trying to decide what to spend it doing. Still, when I pick up a good book I enjoy it just as much as I always have.

It helps that a few times a month I have to travel for work, so get a few hours on the train/plane to delve into a book. Always enjoy that.

I guess it depends what your comparison point is, they might not be great books (in some cases) but Stephen King and Dan Brown aren't aimed at a juvenile market. Or are you questioning if there's a late night version of these writer's novels with some erotic action as you could understand the term "adult literature"? :p

I lost interest for a while but that's because I did a degree in literature. Got sick of the sight of them. Have at least 150 books so I'll have a look and give you a list.

Off true top of my head, King Solomon's Mines is a good read.

To echo what someone else said, I would go through periods of reading books then stop for a couple of months then start again. I received a kindle for Christmas though and found myself reading for around an hour every night. Really has recaptured reading for me.

Currently I'm working my way through the Sherlock Holmes stories and loving them. Maybe it's worth having a quick dip into one of his short stories? Their free on the internet and usually takes me about 45 minutes to get through one.

Although I have never tired of reading, recieving a Kindle for Xmas was great and makes reading even more of a pleasure, great piece of kit and cant recommend them enough.
Also The Road was a great read and actually brought tears to my eyes once I had finished it, I think partly because I have two young sons of my own and would hate to be put into the position the two main characters were in.
