Realistic commuting times - Bristol (Clifton) to Melksham (Wiltshire)

I've not done that exact route but I used to do Bradley Stoke -> Trowbridge and currently do Dursley to Trowbridge so I've got some experience of the M4/A46 sections at least:

Really depends on the time, I leave home early (~5:50am ish) so on both routes I avoided almost all of the morning traffic so you're talking about 35-45 minutes, but even leaving Trowbridge at 4 I hit/notice traffic.

I used to join the M4 at the M5 interchange so don't really know the M32 except that in the afternoon at ~4:40 ish I'd be passing it and there would usually be a bit of a queue forming but I think the majority of that was to join the A4174.

Onto the A46 and again on the way home there's always traffic at the A46/A420 roundabout, sometimes it's not too bad but on a bad day (mostly fridays, and today was like this) the traffic for that roundabout can queue up to the top of the hill just by bath, which according to google is about 2.5 miles, suffice to say it's 'fun'

My trip home now (so ~5-6 miles further and a fairly different route bar the A46) takes me about 1 hour to 1:15 in the car, a fair bit less on the bike.

my mate does a clifton > m32 > m4 commute to get to work, in chipping sodbury

he says the hard part is getting across town to the M32, this is nearly always where the delays occur

The Batheaston Bypass will be solid at usual commuting times, however you should be able to get past it as you aren't taking the Bath junction.

Of you have a free day, try it.

Thanks for the replies. I did the route (albeit from 4-5pm on weekday) and its fine - about 50 mins - though I went up to the M4>M32>Clifton rather than going anywhere close to Bath (which is hideous from past experience and gets clogged with traffic easily).

Don't think I'll be doing this route anyway - went for a interview down there but the job sounds like a poisoned chalice.

As the others have said it should be fine.

I'm commuting daily from the far side of Bath to Filton, and go the M4 -> M32 way - not the A4/A46 though, I cut up by Lansdown and don’t get on the A46 until by Dyrham. The worst bit is always getting across and out of Bath!

Your main concern should be not getting stabbed in Melksham :p.
