I will be upgrading soon, but for the moment I have this: -

Athlon 2600+
Radeon 9800 Pro
1gb memory

I'm happy turning settings down (I only have a small TFT) but is it worth getting it now or should I wait?

just download the demo mate to test it, but my brother was running it on a very similar spec system to yours - so i would say yes

You'll be able to play 2-player on a small map on medium, probably. Possibly 3 player if you put the settings on low (which looks totally rubbish, lol)
So yes it'll run, but only a small fraction of the game and it wont look very good.

No, it won't run well enough to be good. As soon as the unit count goes up, your PC will chug and things will not be fun. Hard luck.

The issue is not the gfx, but the CPU, and even with 2 players on a small map with a low max unit count, it'll have problems.

Well I'm aiming to go for a staggered upgrade and get an asrock dual mobo which will still support my agp graphics card, but I'll get a core duo processor to stick in it. This should run it ok if it's just a CPU thing...

Yeh a core2duo with that card should run the game smoothly on pretty low settings.
I've ran it on my server (dual 3GHz xeons) and a 9600xt and it ran pretty well until the player count got huge.
By that point the graphics card was becoming the limit, struggling to keep up wit the processers.
Gameplay stayed quick, but was getting about 1-2 fps :p

will only be smooth if you stay out of 8 player games and set a low unit limit, my old singlecore p4 caused lag at only 100 ish units per player, with dualcore now i can have 400 but around 500 it starts lagging again...

how good will my sig run it?

single core 3800+ am2
1gb ram
7600gt

NOT overclocked any more.

i get a feeling ill get slowdown in the big battles?
