Hi All :)

I've got some spare cash and just fancy treating myself to a HD DVD player.

I've seen the toshiba ones, and a place in my local high street has one for £300 quid.

No idea if that's a lot etc.

Can anyone recommend any at all?

Vary price ranges, i'll take alook at what ever is suggested.

Many Thanks

Have you got a 360 ?, if you have then get the hd addon, many reviewers have said that it's pretty much on par with the Toshiba HD-A1, also are you sure that you want to invest £300 in a HD-player this early on as Blu-Ray may win the format battle yet ?

Edit - oh, and wear pink :p

I could get the addon but my 360 is loud, and it's all very well in "Cranking the volume" as I do so on many games, but when your watching a film which has silence for tension...the 360 kind of breaks that effect.

I have been thinking about the format battle, and it's just recently as I've seen on a certain website that has atleast 30dvd's i'd buy that are in HD DVD Format and then suddenly really fancied one.

and never :p

Are you saying that the 360 is too loud even when it's not playing a game ? as the hd add on is not like the 360 internal DVD drive, it's pretty much silent, so when playing a hd dvd it will only be as loud as having your 360 at the dash board.

Oh I see, I thought it would be loud for some obscure reason :)

Will take a look.

Thanks :)

£300 is a good price for the standalone.

The 360 is far too loud to use as a movie player IMO - even in hd-dvd mode its noisy. Have personally had 2 360's and listened to about 20 others and all similar. The actual drive does a good job but the noise spoils it form me :(

£300 for a Tosh HD-DVD is really good. Be aware that there's a few versions around. The E1 is the euro version, the EX1 is the better Euro version and the A1 is the US version. If you go with the US version you'll need a power transformer as it'll require 110v. In addition, it won't play European region 2 SD-DVD disks.
So you'd better check which version it is. In addition, some retailers like to suggest that "upsampling" DVD players are HD. NOT true understandably. So make sure what you're buying.

Before we get carried away with HD, shouldn't we ask what display screen is going to be used, and the viewing distance ???

Samsung 26" HDTV

LE26R74BD to be exact

Viewing distance of about 6 - 8 ft

Rocks doesn't it ;) :D

When I first wired it to my PC using the DVI port I was literally blown away. It's about ten times as bright as my LCD and everything on it looks stunning. I was tempted to shove it on my desk and use it as an LCD instead but I was too scared of being labelled a geek by my mates :D Sky HD looks absolutely incredible on it too, although it's too bad the box is downstairs :(

Just a question, as I've only seen HD on 42" and over size screens..... does it make much difference on a smaller 26" ?, when you take the viewing distance in to account... obviously it would from a couple of feet away if it were on your desk etc...... (I've got my eye on the 24" Dell ;)
For me it's to early to worry about HD..... let see what mess the industry can make of it through 2007 !!!

I can tell the difference from about 5 metres away, possibly more although I haven't tried. There is an absolutely massive difference between SD and HD, as long as the source is true HD and not up-scaled SD.

hmmmm that claim is not supported by any of the online distance view calculators ...... the eye is not able to resolve the detail at that distance and screen size..... I'm just being a bit sceptical about the benefit of HD on small screens and reasonable viewing distances.... But then I still think my 42 SD plasma still looks fine with a very quality DVD source, from about 12-15 feet away...... remember once you watch a movie it's letter box format, which further reduce the effect screen size !!......
