I've been looking on this forum for quite a while now and getting totally confused. You see i'm trying to buy a camera and thought this would be a great place to find out what I want. Problem is the options are totally endless.

It would be really good if someone could put up a sticky that informs as to the best kit to get. It would obviously have to be split into categories, for example by price and type and I would imagine there would be a few options within each category/price point. It would also need to be updated regularly with the older out of date and less competitive options updated and removed.

So come on guys if it can be done with GPUs and mobos etc you must be able to do it with cameras.

Won't happen?

Why?

2 direct players - Nikon and Canon, you can't recommend one over the other, it's something you have to pick for yourself.

As above it's a rather hard thing to do as it's not quite as clear cut as with hardware which you can benchmark with relatively ease.

It just doesn't work like that. They're all similar, and it often simply comes down to personal preference dependant on what a person wants. Canon, nikon, sigma, Sony and pentax all make fine cameras and all have good lenses - none is inherently better than the other and they don't objectively benchmark against each other.

So its a matter of try before you buy and see what suits an individual.

Nikon are baaaaad, okkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkaaaaayyyyyyyy

Sometimes it is an easy choice. If most of your friends and family have the same brand, pick that one. You'll get more help, sympathy and maybe borrow bits occasionally.

Not quite but the previous issue from Amateur Photography's supplementary mag shows this year's new releases and *that* might be useful to anyne looking for the latest set up?
