Hi,

I need some new rear brakes for my 05 Ford Focus. The car uses brake shoes and drums.

What do I need to buy? IIRC I only need the brake shoes?

Drums at the rear.

:P

Edit: In fact that wasn't overly clear. :D

Edit2: I've heard mention of spring kits to go with the new shoes. I would imagine a 5 year old car shouldn't need these?

Whilst you have it apart you might as well change the brake cylinders, can't imagine them costing a great deal.

You should only need the shoes, spring kits are normally cheap anyway. They we're only about £4.50 for my golf. You will also need to take the lip off the Drum that has formed otherwise it will cause problems getting the drum off next time, again I had this with my Golf and it was the reason I needed a spring kit as one broke getting the drum off.

I guess it is a mk2 Focus with a small engine (1.4-1.8)? If so you just need these.

Edit - Yes you won't need springs, or you shouldn't do, my old Dolomite didn't need new springs and that was 28 years old at the time!

Thanks. It is a 2.0. Not sure what mk it is over here though. :S.

Cool, I'll see if I can get those too.

Awesome thanks. My father in law has offered to put them on for me, he's very good with cars. I'm going to hopefully learn a little too. :).

Why? It's a 5 year old car. My Anglia didn't need new cylinders until it was over 30 years old.

You should just need brake shoes. Don't add expense that you don't need to.

Don't make em like they used to ;) The rear cylinders in mine were replaced in 2004 and had to replace them as one was seeping.

Yeah, most likely that they haven't got an issue but at lease peel the rubber back and check for fluid. One cylinder in my dad's Focus popped at 7 years old.

I did think twice about suggesting it but thought if they're cheap enough the OP might as well get them changed. Valid point though, OEM stuff can last a fair while.

Suppose better advice would have been as Jane suggested, get them checked first.

:)
