A while ago, I remember reading a post from VRII I think, about how if a 360(or any electrical device) was to fail outside of the standard warranty, you can still get the manufactor to issue a replacement, because it is reasonable to assume that the device should last a reasonablke amount of time for the amount you paid for it.

What company/organisation would you take such a matter up with?

(and no my 360 isn't faulty :P)

Consumer Direct is your first stop when things go bad.
Do not get shirty with the retailer - achieves nothing and they'll rarely step outside anyway ;)
If you get no joy after mentioning the sale of goods act ammended 2002 and the criteria for quality and durability then put it in writing.
With my last returned product it went as far as me sending a second letter known as a 7 day notice which gives them 7 days to sort the issue or face court proceedings.

It is important to note that they can say that you've had some use from it and not give you full cost price back.
So if you've had the xbox 360 for 3 years (I know it isn't possible ;) ) then they can fight it and say you've had £100's worth of use from it and offer you the balance.
However in general I think you'll get a replacement as "an offer of goodwill" especially if you get the customer services directors involved from the retailer.
Remember - never get angry when they are obstructive, the law is on your side and if you get shirty you are weakening your case.
