Reasons not to buy a 30D

I'm currently thinking of replacing my 350D with a 30D and can think of lots of reasons to do so, a few are probably willy waving. But does anyone have some sensible reason not to buy the 30D.

The main pro i'm seeing with the 30D is better layout and general build than the 350D. Faster focusing my 350D seem to hunt quite a bit in lower light levels. Also the larger screen for reviewing the photos taken. Spot mettering would also be useful very occasionaly.

The price is the main thing thats holding me back, about £600 but if i can sell my 350D for £300 it not to bad. I'm also worried that the 40D will be launched shortly but as it likely to just be the 30D with 10mp and dust removal it not to much of a worry.

It will probably have a Digic III porcessor too, which will increase burst shot speeds.

Although at the moment you can get the 30d body for £615 inc cash back, which is a bonus.

30D can be had for £565 using the rebate. But do you really need it? People just seem to buy these things for the sake of it now, and without really thinking about it. It's usually much best to spend the money on lenses than the body. A 30d with poor lenses wouldn't be worth having over a 350d with good lenses...

The 40D won't be available until at least September.
If you need a 30D then buy one now, don't keep waiting for the next camera :)

Personally as an upgrade from the 350d, id skip the 30D and get the 5d or 1dmkIIn...

Not because the 30D is a bad camera, its just the 350D is soo good you wont see a huge benefit upgrading from it to the 30D.

The 30d doesn't look like a toy quite so much though. That's got to be a good reason for buying one :p

Only reason i've got for not upgrading to the 30d (besides money) is that I want the 5d (well what I would really like is a 5d markII).

Because you should be saving for a 1Dmk2, which will hopefully drop in price with the arrival of the mk3.

Does everyone need a 1D? It's big, heavy and perhaps overly complex for someone just looking for a camera which just feels better. I'm avoiding that upgrade because by most people's standards, the 20D I use is imposing enough to shy people away from having their picture taken!

How about a second-hand 20D? The difference in screen size shouldn't really make that much of a difference - it's the historgram that'll tell you whether you've under/over-exposed, the screen on the 20D is big enough to check composition.

I personally wouldn't upgrade and would wait. I will be sticking at least 2 new lenses in my bag before I get rid of the 350d, even then it will probably just remain as a backup.

Can't see myself getting a new camera for at least another year...which for me is a whole Motorsport season so I must trust the 350d enough as it stands :)

I've just upgraded from the 350D to the 30D as I'm starting out in wedding photography and needed a 2nd body and also a more professional camera. I'll still be relying on my 350 as backup/2nd until I can afford another camera. Most wedding photog's will scoff at me for this but we all have to start somewhere and the camera can still take great photos.

Having said that the whole feel of the camera is in a different league to the 350D and given the price difference is well worth the upgrade considering the next jump up to a 5D is over double the price of the 30D. It's quicker to change settings and the whole feel of it is more solid - just small things like the sound of the shutter is much more solid.

I needed to get a backup as I needed a 2nd camera. If that wasn't the case I wouldn't have upgraded. If I was buying my first camera then I'd get the 30D over the 350D/400D as the price difference isn't that much with a big step up in quality. If I was just upgrading for the sake of upgrading I'd probably wait until the end of the year when the rumoured 40D should be available.

I just recently had to upgrade my 350D to a 30D (350D went for a swim in the Irish Sea) and I would never look back...

Spot metering, RGB levels report, larger screen and better form just make for a really great DSLR, I would have gone all the way to a 5D but I couldn't just go to that level of expense yet.

If you want to stick with the 350D why not go down the router of replacing some of your lenses for L series, this is where a hell of a lot of improvement can be made and also the L series lenses will fit on the 5D if you are looking to that option in the future.

Buying another lense is my other choice if i don't get the 30D. I've given up on my dream of a 5D so looking to get a Canon 10-22mm lense as i'm constantly using my 17-40L at the widest. I will also probably get rid of the 17-40L as well as while it a good lense its to short for walkabout in my view. Will probably replace it with the Tameron 28-75 F2.8 as the canon lense in that range are just to pricey and a bit heavy.
