My PC currently reboots under load - only when gaming - and actually completely powers off for a few seconds, then starts up. It's not a Windows crash, it's a hardware power off.

It started doing it about a month ago, while playing WoW. Twice on the bounce. So I turned down the graphical detail, and it seemed to stabilise.
About 3-4 days later (I'd picked up ME:A, and was playing that) it started doing it regularly, so this time, I removed the OC on my 2500k from 4.2Ghz down to stock.

This stabilised it for about 10 days, then it started again. So I figured it was temp related (almost summer, higher ambient) but both HWMonitor and Speedfan reported OK temps (CPU never going above 50, GFX not over 84, system 45)

It seems random - it did it 3 times in quick succession just now, sometimes not even loading Mass Effect properly before crashing and especially during transitions on load screens. Logged temps at the time aren't even near the above mentioned highs at this point.

It seems temp related (increase in ambient could explain the increase in regularity) but at the same time, it seems oddly 'degenerative' in me having to turn down the detail, then turn down the OC, etc, but the temp monitoring doesn't support it.
And I've never seem overheating actually power of the system completely for a few seconds, that seems more like PSU or mainboard issues?

Anyone any ideas?

That's indeed like if PSU or some other part is failing...

Besides trying things like another PSU you could try running stress tests to try to bracket problem's location.
Prime small-FFT and especially Linpack based Intel Burn Test/Linx are good for testing CPU.
Though if done the usual way with brute forcing more volts also CPU's VRM on motherboard could have gotten overstressed.

Had a similar issue to you with my previous PSU (EVGA P2 850w) where it would suddenly reeboot whilst gaming with no obvious reason why. It also increased in frequency untill it started happening within minutes of starting a game.

I tried a couple of things like changing the graphics card, but nothing worked. I then changed the PSU and I've not had the problem since.
