Hiya guys,

Just like a lot of people here I would like some advice on a build please! Always built my own comps, but usually with 3-4 year gap in between so never get to transfer any knowledge as the industry changes so much!!

Current comp has finally died, possibly with some help from a virus, and cant face sorting it out anymore, so gonna replace the main components and start again. I’m looking to build primarily for speed of use and games, with a bit of future proofing so it will last awhile, and have come up with the following combination.

Asus M4A77TD Pro AMD 770 (Socket AM3) PCI-Express DDR3 Motherboard

AMD Phenom II X4 Quad Core 945 3.00GHz (Socket AM3) - Retail

OCZ Gold 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 PC3-10666C9 Low-Voltage Triple Channel (OCZ3G1333LV6GK)

XFX ATI Radeon HD 4870 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card

Western Digital Caviar Black 500GB SATA-II 32MB Cache - OEM (WD5001AALS)

I have a budget of about £500, and have all the peripherals etc, which is why I’m self building again, planning to run win7 64bit as the OS.

I guess the main questions are:

1) Will it all go together?
2) Will my existing Tagem TG530 U15 power supply be beefy enough?
3) The memory is listed as optimised for i7/x58 chipset, will this be a prob?
4) Would my existing Giel 2GB DDR400 mem be any use? Could just get an OCZ upgrade for another 2GB maybe? Cut costs and get better graphics card.
6) Will everything still fit inside my rather nice but old Coolermaster ATX case?
5) Am I daft to try this given that my knowledge consists of, stick it together, set to start from disc, install windows, install drivers, YAY! (Bearing in mind that my wife will NEVER let me forget I did not let her buy one from a certain large World related PC retailer)

Any help would be very much appreciated
Adam

I'm afraid to say, but the AM3 gear is only dual channel, so I'd suggest a dual channel RAM kit. Also, I would suggest an I5 setup, as much as I like AMD you're going to get more overclockability and more performance for your money

For a gaming build, focus more on gfx than cpu, something like this

Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 5770 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card + Colin McRae Dirt 2 Full Game £119.98 (£104.33)
OCZ Gold 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C8 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (OCZ3G16004GK) £79.99 (£69.56)
AMD Phenom II X2 Dual Core 550 3.10GHz Black Edition (Socket AM3) - Retail + Colin McRae Dirt 2 Full Game £77.99 (£67.82)
Gigabyte GA-MA770T-UD3P AMD 770 (Socket AM3) PCI-Express DDR3 Motherboard £69.99 (£60.86)
Samsung SpinPoint F3 1TB SATA-II 32MB Cache - OEM (HD103SJ) £60.98 (£53.03) Sub Total : £355.60
Shipping cost assumes delivery to UK Mainland with:
DPD Next Day Parcel
(This can be changed during checkout) Shipping : £9.50
VAT is being charged at 15% VAT : £54.77
Total : £419.87

Or even a 5850 if you manage to source one

Thanks for all the advice, final build looks like this, or will anyway, will make the order tomorrow to allow time for further criticism! Which would be welcome, as long as its not about my mother.

AMD Phenom II X4 Quad Core 955 Black Edition 3.20GHz (Socket AM3) - Retail + Colin McRae Dirt 2 Full Game - £137

Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 5770 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card + Colin McRae Dirt 2 Full Game - £120

OCZ Obsidian 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 Dual Channel (OCZ3OB1600LV4GK) - £73

Gigabyte GA-MA770T-UD3P AMD 770 (Socket AM3) PCI-Express DDR3 Motherboard - £70

Western Digital Caviar Black 500GB SATA-II 32MB Cache - OEM (WD5001AALS) - £43

Total - £443

PS – anyone want to buy a copy of Colin McRae Dirt 2? :)
