Recently lost all my music files.

There are two types of people in this world... those who make backups, and those who have never lost data.

Very true. My music is duplicated through:

Retail CDs
Backup CDRs of those CDs
Backup data CDs
Two internal hard drives of mp3s
One external hard drive of mp3s
Netbook with mp3s

A work colleague of mine's computer broke and she was really annoyed because she lost all her music. I could only argue that she obviously didn't care about her music that much.

Years ago during the final stages of a 'routine' format and Windows XP reinstall, I went downstairs to make a cup of tea. It was then that I remembered I hadn't backed up anything.

That was how I lost my first music collection, and some very good game saves. :D Lesson learnt!

i have my entire music collection duplicated on my pc, my laptop and an external drive. the good stuff is also on my mp3 player. one slight snag....they're all in the same room. i really should think about off site storage. :o

All my music is in at least 3 places, and plenty of it is in 5 places.

Computer
Time Machine incremental backup
iPod Touch

With a mix also on the original CDs in the loft and on my iPhone.

Fairly well covered.

80% of my music are on CD.
100% of the music I love are on CD.

and it's all backed up via time machine.

Yeah because the OP is asking exactly how/where everyone backups backup copies of their backup. Off topic much?

Anyway...having completely no idea what type of music you are into, here's a few of my favourite albums-

Why didn't you use an undelete program?

The only reason I asked was because a couple of months ago I had an accident with somebody elses data and lost around 2,500 music files (all paid for) and 1000s of photographs mainly focussed on their child from baby to now (9 years old).
Everything was gone and I felt like slitting my wrists.
I calmed down and found a program called Active File Recovery and it recovered every file.
I've just done a quick test with it on my download drive where I'm deleting stuff every day and I could still recover stuff from 12/4/10.
Chances are your files are still revoverable.
Even if you did a format and re-installation of windows there could still be a chance (quick format definitely).
