Hi,

Looking for a car for 2-3K. Will be used for daily commute to work (Preston to Manchester).

Safety features/equipment and reliability are most important and cheap to insure/run.

What would you guys recommend?

Was looking at the IS200 but it is for a 22 year old so insurance is going to be expensive I guess...

Thanks! :)

Any particular engine? What are the automatics like? Diesel/Petrol? Assuming you mean the Mondeo of course, don't frequent the forum much but know the mondeo bandwagon...:p

As said. That budget can get you a tidy 03 "Blue Oval Vectra" (Mondeo). Fits the bill very well.

I'd avoid the 1.8 petrol - I had one and it was a little sluggish especially when loaded. But it should be fine if you're not after something swift, pulls willingly enough. If buying a petrol Prefer an '03 or later as they have the revised "swirl flaps" which are a common failure point on older Mondeos. I hear bad things about the diesels lunching their dual mass flywheels and the other usual problems most modern diesels get sooner or later (injectors, turbo etc) - Myself, I would go for a 2.0 petrol unless doing high mileage

Brother's just stated he would like something like a Golf/Yaris/Fiesta of an effort in terms of size...

Easier to park init.

Must be....

I know it's been done to death on here, but the bigger car gets you more for the same money. The Focus TDCi only does about 5mpg more, costs the same to tax and (in my case) insure, yet gives you a lot more in terms of comfort, equipment, practicality etc.

Even comparing "equivalent" specs, like Zetec against Zetec, the Mondeo is better equipped - thats before you remember that the Focus Zetec will cost about the same as a Mondeo Ghia.

Sure you might not need a big car, but in terms of comfort and noise they're a lot better and can still handle very well. My car gets mainly used to shuttle me to and from the office, which I could do in a Ka. But try loading a Ka up with wardrobes from Ikea. Only on wednesday I had to shift a load of kit for work - 15 complete desks worth of equipment; terminals, monitors, keyboards/mice, phones, cables etc etc - had it all boxed up and my colleague was convinced it would be 2 or 3 runs, but it all quite happily went in the back with the seats down
