I'm a disgrace of a man who can't cook, but just having bought my first house its about time I got my arse into gear. Can anyone recommend a decent beginners book to cooking?

Nothing extravagent, just nice teas etc.

aghh delia smith is rubbish. her recipes can't be used for anything more than a starting point.

The goodfood magazine 101 book series is a great starting place, especially the 101 one-pot dishes IBN: 0-563-52291-7
pictures for every recipe is also very useful.

Get the chefs compendium of professional recipes it is the only book to get for learning the basics.

This is the book all catering colleges use to teach the apprentice chefs.

it is a superb first book. forget the celebrity books they are just nasty imho

I atually quite like Delia, I use some of her recipes including a lovely dauhinoise that everyone loves when I make it and the christmas puddings, mince pies and a nince salmon dish. I love her Christmas book.

I tend not to stick to recipes anyway and just add or take things out as I feel fit; except with cakes and biscuits as that's slightly different.

Mostly I find out the basic recipe and then change it about. Cooking is easy once you start doing it.

As a basic cook book delia is actually pretty good IMO. I still have her complete cookery book somewhere...
If you want recipes for roasts basic pies and deserts it's not a bad place to start. I think it gets slated unduly tbh. She's a housewifes cookbook, if what you want is basic english grub then it's pretty good. If you want simple recipes that look good then Jamie oliver is pretty good too.

I tend to go to bbc.co.uk/food for my recipies. You just whack in a couple of ingredients and hey presto!

I made a lovely Thai Pork Curry on Tuesday evening and it was really easy to do.
I'd recommend do that, see if you like it then you can invest in cook books if you get into cooking more.

to be fair the original poster states he can't cook. so delias 'learn to cook books' will be a good start - most of us might find them laughably basic but - its sad to say but some people really have never cooked a proper meal for themselves, wouldnt know what to do with some vegetables etc

Uh Huh, I was given my copy when I left home for uni. The fact that i still have it shows I value it at least a bit since that was umm 9 years ago now!
