Recommend me a Cook/Chef's knife please

Is that the one on St Stephens St? Might have to pop down.

It is indeed! I was weekend staff for 2 years and then on my gap year I was doing 30 hours or so a week instead. The returns policy is literally unrivaled and there are zero exceptions to it; you arn't happy with something at ANY time and have the receipt, bring it back and you'll get a full refund. This can be 5+ years after you bought it. Great company all round, even though occasionally their pricing can be on the high side.

You could get him a Victorinox chefs knife ( the ones with the rosewood handles rather than the cheaper fibrox ones as the wood one has a nice weight to it and looks better ). Good quality and very sharp, and you can pick one up for around 30 quid. Leave you some cash left over to maybe get a paring or a carving knife as well.

I have a number of high end knives, including Henckels Four Stars and Wusthof Ikons, but the cheaper Victorinox chef's knife I have is probably my favourite and the one i use the most. Had it for several years and still going strong :)

Having said that, if you could stretch your budget higher, you can't go wrong with a Wusthof knife ( Classic or Ikon ). Nice old fashioned German heft to it, feels really heavy but balanced at the same time, and made from top quality steel ( forged as well rather than a stamped blade).
