As my new job is 100 miles round trip the poor old MR2 will get savaged doing that kind of miles everyday, so i have decided to buy a second car as a work horse. Preferably diesel, but would consider petrol, budget is max of 1k.
Was thinking in the lines of a Xantia or 406 or something...

Either of the above sound spot on to me. Assuming you're after that size/class of car, avoid the Mondeo Mk1/Mk2 TD - it's not a particularly great engine compared to the 1.9 Tdi in the Xantia or 406 (I'd have thought the newer HDi would be out of your budget).

You've already chosen!

Eiterh Xantia or 406. Think the 406 would swing it for me, others may disagree, but thats their right!!! ;)

406 4tw!

If you're doing a large amount of mileage then the Xantia would be a good choice as it's exceptionally comfortable and smooth riding.

The 406 is the better car to drive, however, and it's still a good car.

Either would be a great choice so I'd personally choose your favourite out of the two. As said above, avoid the awful 1.8TD in the Mondeo

I'd go for a 406 probably out of those two. If it's supposed to be a cost saving car go for whatever will go wrong the least/ be least expensive to fix. Personally I'd go for a 1.7 TD Cavalier. Nice and cheap, pretty reliable and simple. Much better cruiser than some of the french diesal's I've been in too, the 306 was stupidly noisy, not sure if the 406 is better.

I had my Rover 620SDi for 3 years, did over 60,000 miles in it, and it had no problems at all.

From experience, a Pug is a lot more expensive to fix than a Rover.

The Rover L-Series diesel is a very strong engine.

Rover 420 Diesel are very reliable extremely cheap and easy to work on cars...

Other then that from your 2 you mentioned, the 406 for sure, it looks much nicer and isn't subject to citreon build quality, but that just from my experiences, mind you I don't like french cars from that era due to spares prices..

Rover 420 GSDI, SDI, rover 600 GSDI, GSDI etc etc

very good cars tbh for work hourse etc

and cheap to buy parts are cheap too and the running gear is based on the honda accord?

Definately go for a french 1.9TD. they are superb engines that will go on forever. my family run a 1.9td citroen zx and its given us no problems at all over more than 10 years.

the xantia or 406 are definately better looking cars but if you want aboslute bottom dollar then the ZX may be worth a look.

If you decide on a Vauxhall Cavalier, make sure you get the Isuzu diesel engine. More horsepower and better reliability.
