Recommend me a good script for a members' section

Hi guys,

I am looking to add a password protected members' section to my new site.
I have access to SQL and PHP - please recommend a good script for adding a private login for members.

If you want it to be paid members area, i'd recommend Amember. It's a very cool piece of software.

I am not planning for it to be paid - just a section for members of our group.

Ideally a freeware solution - but I am willing to pay if the software is worth it.
