Hey guys,
I'm getting married exactly a year from today and it's been left to me to surprise the missus with our honeymoon. She doesn't want to know where we're going until we get to the airport!
I'm completely stuck on this one. I was thinking somewhere in the Carribean like Cuba or Jamaica or else the Maldives. The huricane season in September is putting me off the Carribean but the Maldives might be slightly too expensive. Anyone been to either at this time of year or knows what the climate is like? Basically, i'm completely open to sensible suggestions here so fire away!
Requirements are:
- Must be sunny!
- Have things to do apart from just sitting beside the pool/on the beach eg. things like waterparks and excursions.
- Have good night time entertainment such as live music.
- Trying to keep budget of around £2,000 for the two of us.
Thanks!
Matt
I am in The Maldives right now, weather is brilliant. What do you want to know? (I am working here)
2 grand will be tight for 2 people and decent accommodation. Best airfare is with SriLankan (#621 at the moment). Expect a resort to cost around $400+ a night ($400 is a good 3* though. Something like The Conrad is a 5* and starts at $650). Rainy season has just ended, and weather is fantastic. Also it's not peak season so prices aren't terrible.
Male isn't that bad but you don't want to spend too much time here!
Caribbean- Depending on where you go, it can be hurricane season. Barbados, St Vincent & Grenadines, etc are outside the 'hurricane belt' and fantastic places to visit. If diving is your thing, The Grenadines are just great.
Brazil is another option- Fernando de Noronha (which is paradise on earth), then a few days in Rio maybe? The rainy season is just ending in Brazil about now. It's expensive-ish, but there is no end of things to do. Nightlife in Brazil is unbeatable anywhere on earth (esp. live music). 2000 quid might be OK for 2 weeks if you get a good deal on the flights, but Fernando might be a bit out of your budget, as every aspect of it is quite pricey. I did find a cheap airline to get there from the major cities called Azul (I think), so might be worth some investigation.
The Iguacu falls are also well worth a visit, as is Morro de Sao Paulo if you find Fernando de Noronha too expensive.
Brazil is certainly cheaper in terms of accommodation than Maldives and has more going on. Also it's less 'resorty' which is a good thing I think.
The real killer for Maldives is the extortionate price of transfers the hotels slap on you. Example, we can get a sea plane for just over $20 each way to the island The Conrad is on. The hotel will charge EACH GUEST $400 return! Crazy. Even the Holiday Inn want $200 each for a return transfer.
