Right, I've had a D-link 300T for a long while now, and it's awful. Keeps dropping the connection randomly, and won't bring it back up.

What I need therefore is something that's 100% reliable, and is just an ADSL ethernet modem. I don't need a router, or any firewalling or vpn connectivity or anything like that, but I do need it to be able to not die all the time.

I'm off to a different country for 6 months, and effectively I need it to serve the internet properly without ever being rebooted. Is such a thing possible? Does a suitable modem exist?

Thanks

I'm looking for an Ethernet modem to work with my current router, one of the ones that I have found that I will probably order is the Linksys ADSL2MUE, and this supports USB and Ethernet.

I will be getting it for my router because having been on cable and spent quite a few quid on a decent router; I want to get something that will allow me to still use the router.

Decided to invest in a cisco 837. Bit of a price leap from what I was expecting to pay, but given that I need to learn more about cisco stuff, it seemed sensible. Damn good router as well.

Personally, I wouldn't buy an 837 now as the ADSL modem isn't ADSL2+. They are of course though, a great router.

It'll have a pretty good resale value I would have thought. Besides, couldn't get an 877 within my budget, so I'll hang onto the 837 for a while and see what happens.

Be warned it is ye olde evil Conexant though
Yeah - scrub that. If you check my other thread, I'm actually having problems with it crashing when using p2p. Time for another one, methinks.... The DSL-300T, per chance.

Well, if you risk the D-link, be warned that mine drops the wan connection randomly, and so does my friends. And they weren't bought close toghether (in time) so it's not as if it's a faulty hardware batch....

I've done a bit of googling, and it seems that the latest UK firmware does cause the modem to drop out with p2p software/excessive connections.

On the plus side, there're a few telnet hacks you can do to increase connections and stability... and there's some firmware on the D-Link Russia site about a year newer than the UK firmware that upgrades it to support ADSL2+, and apparently cures the problems almost completely. We shall see. If not, it'll be on that auction site fairly sharpish.

EDIT: Check this link if anyone's interested. Unfortunately, the settings don't save... so you have to manually enter them everyime you restart it. http://users.fulladsl.be/spb11947/bmcage/intranet/adslnetwork.html

I had a £15 Nortel one I bought off eBay, worked fine for ages until I replaced all the seperate devices with a Speedtouch 580.

i used a speedtouch 546 and know a lot of places that either use that or the previous 510 model they seems very reliable and can handle quite long lines easily. mite be worth looking into as they arnt to expensive either
