due to my lack of computer knowledge and the plethora of good people out there i am hoping you can recommend me a hard drive that can be used and moved about to play on tv etc - say if i had a film on the drive it would let me just plug it into the tv and play the film.

i know its out there just hoping for some recommendations and reviews - what is the quality like etc.

thanks in advance

You mean an external HD that just plugs straight into a TV directly? TBH, I've never seen one, and after a google about just now not been able to readily find one. You'll need some real hardware somewhere to decode the AVIs, so unless you have some weird TV with a USB socket and AVI playback built in, this is a no-go. You'll need a drive in it's own little PC, like a Mac Mini or one of those dinky little cases from AOpen. Otherwise, and if you find one please let me know, you'd need a DVD player that supports AVI playback and also USB external HDs. Many of them support AVI playback from films burnt off to DVD, but I've never heard of one that supports external HDs.

Ah, hang on, I might be being a bit thick here :) Have a look at the Archos jukeboxes. I think some of their range do video output. A bit pricey, but might do the job you're after.
