Hey guys,

I plan on ordering a couple packs of strings. I'm currently using some light gauge Daddario's and they've been great but I fancy trying some new strings as I've only been playing for about 8 months.

I'll probably be ordering from Strings Direct, so please do blast some suggestions my way!

I plan on getting some mediums now as I've developed calluses :)

Go heavy. The sound is awesome, although you will probably bleed for the first month and the truss rod will need some attention.

I've used a few different types on my acoustic, trying to get a sound I like...

Dean Markley 'Blue Steels' - sound cold and bright; nice and bendy.
D'Addario Phosphor Bronze - bog standard... sound pretty warm, but unremarkable...
Elixir (can't remember what type) - sounded very warm and are fantastic on heavies, but as a student I couldn't afford them so stuck with D'Addarios...

D'Addario EJ16s are my string of choice. I don't like to use coated strings (Elixer, EXP, Cleartone). I find that I get just as much play out of an uncoated string as a I a coated one, so I just use uncoated as they're about half the price. Uncoated strings are commonly regarded to have a better sound, but not last as long as a coated string.

But in answer to your question, you need to find a string that you and your guitar like. Certain strings just don't feel right on certain guitars and some strings just do. You need to find out which strings feel right. So everytime you go to buy a new pack, buy a different pack.

D'Addario 80/20s 12s or 13s (depending on what I'm playing at the time).

I wouldn't recommend the strings with custom lights (or whatever they're called). These have different tensions from bass to high strings, which can cause twisting in the neck since they start with heavy strings(Low E) then go towards lighter strings than would usually come with these heavy strings. (High E)
