OK, so trance is *really* not my usual genre, but I'm a big Hybrid fan (I think they are classed as Trance, but I wouldn't put them in that genre...)

Current winamp playlist here:

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/james.waynewright/Winamp.html

I just heard a song (FB - "Who's Knocking" (Ferry Corsten remix)) that I really enjoyed, so I got Ultra Trance 5 (what a name...).

What a mix of stuff - some is awful and basic with contrived chord sequences, whilst other stuff is actually interesting or clever.

Could anyone recommend some artists / DJs who are consistently good and don't churn out your run-of-the-mill four chord "uhn-tiss" trance?

thanks!

:D

BT is your man. My all time favourite producer, he is incredibly talented. I guess it doesn't get much more 'intelligent' than employing mathematicians to help you produce tracks!! Do a quick google for BT (or Brian Transeau) + interview, he often goes into great detail about how he makes his tracks. His style also crosses most genres of EDM, there is a lot of breaks and even some hip-hop on his albums along with the usual trance and progressive.

BT - Rare & Remixed
This is a fantastic mix compilation thats a few years old now. It's got about 50% of his own tracks and the rest are all of the highest quality. It's very driving and energetic

BT - ima
This is his first artist album, released in 96 i think. Good quality progressive trance which at the time really helped push the trance genre forwards.

BT - ESCM
BT - Movement in still life
Two of the best EDM albums ever for me. Quality tracks across a range of genres and you will find lots of tracks in most trance fans top 10 of all time

BT - Emotional Technology
I love this album but i don't think it's quite what you're looking for. The style is hard to describe but it's not really trance

EDIT\\ It surprised me to find out that FB is actually an alias for Ferry Corsten & Benni Benassi

EDIT2\\ Hybrid is breakbeats :)

Summerbreeze by Tiesto might be worth a listen, not strictly trance all the way through but good none the less.

Cygnus X, Larent Garnier, Richie Hawtin, Jeff Mills. More techno than trance but I think you'll like them.

Are you going to go to Global Gathering with "George"? I'd love to meet you

edit - Just seen that you're going to the London meet so I guess I'll see you there! Do you like electronic music that much then?

Who are you and how do you know George?!

I do like electronic music, but not exclusively. I like a whole load of different kinds of music. I've found that the only trance I can really get into is the really psychadelic stuff (Goa trance?) like Infected Mushroom, Symbiotic, Shamanic Tribes on Acid etc.

You might appreciate the simplistic beauty of Ralphie B - Massive :)

I've been lsitening to a lot of Psy lately, so can reccomend:

Overlap - Time Express
Overlap - When Dreams Come True
Aquatica - Emotion
Protoculture - Dawn Razor

I know this is a really old thread, but just browsing through.

Have you had a look on www.hybridized.org?

Its about the only place I visit music wise, but has loads of great free dj sets, including Hybrids stuff.

I love Hybrid, not as much as I used too, but from that site Ive found a good few similar artists, currently my favourites are (from the site)

Andrew Kelly
Micah
V-Sag

Really great dj sets, high quality too usually. Usually with .cue files so you can burn away!

Just thought I'd mention :D

edit: oh and http://www.mixdepot.net/ which was made by the same people as hybridized, more up and coming djs but still some good finds if you are prepared to listen through some of them.

DJ Teisto

and you might get along with 4 strings :)

No offense but that's hardly intelligent trance. 4 strings in particular never even slightly stray away from the usual mould of a trance song.

This is a bumped thread so recommendations probably aren't of much help anymore but Way Out West, their production quality is superb and everytime i listen to 'killa' it astounds me how many different sounds and layers they incorperate into one track.

BT - flaming june

Used to love BT, but his last album was a bit of a dissapointment, so Ive not bothered with his stuff much these days.

As you said, Flaming June is one of my all time tracks, I love ESCM, and Movement in Still Life is good, and I love Ima too, was the first CD that got me into that style of music, was a brilliant cd in its time, why cant BT do more stuff like that.

Well, I will have to take a look on that site now, always on the lookout for new stuff, I was mainly giving some reccomendations, Hybridized doesnt have a lot of artists, its a select group I suspect, but it does have some great stuff. The thing I like about it is that you have a good few artists and know what you are downloading, so to speak.

Not a great fan of WOW, but some of their stuff is good.

I wasn't belittling Hydridized or anything - in fact I was quite chuffed when I stumbled accross it (being a Hybrid fan).

Sadly, I've not visitied either site for quite some time now - but, imo, you just can't beat live sets and these two sites are very good for that.

I'd go with that. Not really a fan of WOW but my housemate at uni was and I think "Ajare" and "Blue" are excellent tracks.

Chicane might be worth looking at too, some of their singles are a bit 'mainstreamised' but the first two albums have some 'intelligent' stuff on there.

As far as DJs go, Paul Oakenfold did some very good mixes around the turn of the millenium. He did R1 essential mix world tour in 1999, and his set from Space was almost untouchable in my eyes, probably very hard to get hold of now though.

Oh and if you like Ferry Corsten's work be sure to check out some System F.

Anything by Lange, DJ Doby's brill, but his mixes go on for over an hour thou
I have found a good onlie radio station is www.di.fm, it's an American site, but saying that the stuff that's played it wkd. I have found better trance by listening to groups from Europe, mainly from Belgium, with the likes of Lasgo, Ian Van Dahl and Milk Inc, and a few more.

Hope this helps
