Record rise in insurance costs

whiplash for 3-4mph accident? wtf.. i could get hit by a car at that speed and just walk away laughing.. some people seriously..

:( It sucks.
It was coming up to the Dartford Bridge, and there was miles of traffic. So could never have been going fast

Actually, what is the process when people claim whiplash? How is it "diagnosed"?

Clearly I am in the minority with both my wife and I getting lower insurance costs this year (both 25, no points or accidents etc). I had bargain hard for it though!

Vicous circle.

The insurance companies blame uninsured drivers and false claims etc for rise in premiums. But the substantial rise (particularly for young drivers) pushes some down the route of driving while not insured and making the most of claims if they are insured.

I've spent about 6/7 hours this renewal finding the best deal.

I've saved a whole £15 on last years price. Took me 7 hours to save 15 quid lol... bad times. I'm surprised I even managed the price I got in the end. Huge rises all round this year :(

Young men are bearing the grunt of it, damn right too. As soon as they stop having so many accidents and making whiplash claims, it'll go down.

I bet a good number of the 18 year olds having a good whinge about this will still go out and drive like an absolute **** when/if they do get onto the road. If it keeps them off the road until they grow a bit more grey stuff between the ears, it can only be a good thing

The problem is that not all 17-19 year old lads drive like the end of a rather large bell (which is why I will have 10 years NCB come renewal), but due to the laws of probability and averages, insurance companies will charge them ridiculous rates claiming statistical risk.

It's a shame there isn't a more logical and personal way to get quoted, but there isn't.

No, of course not - I've never had any points or accidents either. But the proportions are massively different to any other age group. I personally blame a lot of the modified car scenes for a lot of it - when you lads are being encouraged to think their shopping trolleys are street racing machines, they're going to drive accordingly.

More personal quotes would be excellent, but the costs of being able to do it would make it unfeasible

But that's the thing, it won't. They'll either end up fronting, or not have any insurance at all.

Absolutely, I'm not deluded that this will happen - maybe the insurance companies need to part fund a scheme to help the problem - insurance discs for example

Increase road-tax by a percentage (say 20%), but have that include basic third-party cover.

You could then opt out of the higher tax charges if you have valid per-arranged insurance.

Would such an amount even begin to cover the costs involved in insuring every taxed car on the road third party?

insurance companies are as much to blame as anyone tbh
i'll cite my recent accident

guy drove into me, nothing serious just a run of the mill accident albeit i was injured

other parties insurance company admitted liability the next day and i tried to arrange a replacement vehicle through them.

at this point i explained to them yes i was sore no i hadnt spoke to a solicitor yet etc etc

i also explained at this point that i was a taxi driver and i badly needed a hire car to continue taxiing. my radio base could provide a hired skoda for £150 per week would they pay this seeing as they admit liability.

erm no

long story short they offered me a non plated courtesy car which is no use to me for work. I ended up going to an accident managment company who then proceeded to put me into a hired taxi at a cost of £139.96+vat per DAY bear in mind they could have paid £150 a week inc vat but refused they now faced a bill of more than that per day

total courtesy car time over 3 weeks or £3500 in vehicle hire costs which could have been under £500 if they had any common sense.

after the car hire fiasco i had umpteen calls from the other parties insurance regarding my injuries. i explained yes i had been hurt and yes i'll be looking for pysio treatment which they hummed and hawed and messed me about and messed me about until i ended up going through the same accident managment company to obtain physio treatment(only way they would do this was if i put a claim in(btw they charge £175 per hour for their services.

long story short, what could have been a very reasonable and quickly sorted out claim is now ongoing with solicitors involved and all sorts of massive bills heading the other insurance companies way.

all they had to do was put me in a hired taxi. slip me a few quid to cover the days i ended up off work and cover my £2000 repair bill

could have been

£450 taxi hire
£2000 vehicle repair
£whatever a physio costs
£couple of hundred to me for inconvenience and time off work

perhaps all in £3500

currently costs i guesstimate so far

£2000 repair
£3500 car hire
£2500i would guess a MIMIMUM in solicitors fees and physio costs
£1500 i would imagine in personal injury claim that i ended up making plus whatever they gouge them out of for all my running about and loss of earnings

current situation - i'm down a weeks takings plus still suffering pain (as i havent been to see a physio yet due to much messing about between my solicitor and the insurance company so working less hours so i'm making less money. i'm out my excess for my insurance £500 that i ended up having to pay upfront to get my own car back that i still havent got back yet. tbh i wish i had just refused to pay it and kept the hire car until it was paid by the other guys insurance. (should have just said i didnt have it spare so tough- i'll keep my £1200 a week hire car thanks

they either really dont care about saving money or they plan on making it back on their renewals so dont really care. the first port of call should be the entire insurance industry giving themselves a shake and looking closer to home before blaming everything else for spiraling costs

hmm suddenly that claims tripled in cost all because they wouldnt

Been investigating using Confused at various insurance costs following my DR20 driving ban.

Based on a 25 year old male with 5 years no claims, license for 7 years, no points, D20 ban but not accidents to declare and in a Blackburn postcode (varies with insurers, some refuse!).

1.4 Jazz - £800.
My old EP3 CTR - £2500.
Import FD3S RX7 - £2000.
S2000 - £2500.
Import MX5 (current car) - £1500.
S1 Elise - £1800.
S2 Elise - £2500.

Current car premium (bought nov 2009) - £1000 without the ban. Odd one, was quoted £600 for myself alone, added my girlfriend of the time which took it to £1k then took her off April but the cost only changed £50.

These are just pot luck confused.com quotes so I expect through the right broker I should be getting some of those nearer the £1500 cut off I set myself for insurance. They seem a bit random but then comparison sites are chaff. No point me getting a proper quote as I have 7 months of ban left to save up.

Looking to save for an S1 Elise while I'm off the road and I'm surprised it looks like I could manage it insurance wise. Although I might be getting ahead of myself for after a serious and deserved ban to jump into an Elise, it's a goal to save up for regardless of the outcome. Looking forward to it. If not, will look into insurance for modding the MX5.

Insurance makes little sence to me, I can insure - with my current insurers - a £30k 507BHP e60 M5 should I want for £560 odd yet they decline me for even a quote for a £4k Escort RS Turbo with 132BHP!

I'm sure its all down to risk, having owned an RST well, 2 actually, in the past, I just know I'd be a bigger risk with an EXTRA 375BHP to play with!

Bonkers.

With any luck the extra cash might get passed onto the bodyshops. People like Audatex might increase the number of hours required to repair cars and the bodyshops can actually earn some decent money out of it all whilst putting out a higher percentage of decent jobs. It might even prevent a few more from going out of business.
