Lo all, I'm looking at some way of conecting my guitar up to a pc to record what I'm playing. Basically I want to get a drum sample, lay down a rythm guitar, and then be able to play over the top.

Trouble is, I don't have a clue how to go about it. Most people seem to talk about plugging their guitar into their soundcard, which I wouldn't know how to do, and sounds a bit fiddly. I'm assuming I need some sort of software, is there any that you could reccomend?

I have seen some devices that work via USB, but would that suit my needs?

I really don't have a clue, so please no technical posts. Explain how you explain to a small child!

Thanks :)

I've got a Guitarport, Floorpod and Pod v2 so I can vouch for the quality of those products.
I think CleanBlueSky has got a toneport and loves it.
I've just borrowed my Dads Variax for two weeks and its the most amazing guitar (or guitars) I've ever played and I've got to get one.

Hoorah, I ordered it!

Will make some quick demos and upload them when I recieve and tell you all if I think its any good :)

Which one? The 300?

I thought they 300 played much like an Encore Strat but the sounds were like "**** ME!" I'm in the market for a 600 at the moment. Can be had for about £500 and play most like a Strat which is ideal for me. :D

I hope you don't blame me
I didn't go just off of your suggestion, read some reviews and it seemed to get a pretty damn good responce.

But if I hate it, I will be blaiming you, yes ;)

Now listen to me very carefully -
Now go onto the Variax page and listen to some of those sounds coming from the Variax guitars through Variax gear such as the Toneport.

Also go to this page and listen to what this guy has done with the Variax - http://www.guitaristjeffmiller.com/audio.htm
Was being sarcy, I don't doubt line6 for a second :)

I'm really excited about starting recording. It gives me a chance to redo all my favourite songs, and start putting decent effort into making my own.

*Bounces up and down* :D

I've been meaning to get my act together for aaaaages now and record some stuff decently, a no-nonsense solution is VERY appealing!
I watched the film and it looks pretty much like a riff sketchbook.
Is it capable of a lot more drum different drum sounds/time sigs?
What about adding other instruments?
Does it have limitations dmpoole? Cheers

No idea about the Rifftracker software but all the experts are here - http://www.line6.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi

Being too lazy to read through it all, do you need any Line6 hardware in order to use this software?
It comes with the Toneport hardware you need to connect it to your pc, ya.

Bah, hurry up friday :(

Which TonePort are you getting, the UX2?
I beg your pardon, I don't think that is included, I misquoted something.

I believe you get a guitarport with the rifftracker/riffworks software.

There's a board for everything.
If I could be bothered doing research I wouldn't be casually asking though...
What software do you use then? Cubase? Or do you just have the Guitarport to get sounds out through amp?

No more questions after this, I'll go look at the link... :)

The Rifftracker version comes with a Guitarport (hardware) and Rifftracker (software).

I use my standalone Guitarport with Cakewalk SONAR 5 (soon to be 6).

The Guitarport doesn't need an amp because it is an amp simulator that plugs straight into your computer.

Go and watch the videos here www.line6.com/guitarport

I understand that. What I was asking was whether it can be used as a sort of effects pedal to get different sounds out of someone's main amplifier. Cheers anyway, I will watch the videos and await Nitefly's comments after Friday!

No unless you put it through a PC into your amp.
