I've got a laptop with 'sigmatel c-major audio'. Is it possible to record whatever sounds my laptop is making, without using cables? I've done similar before by plugging the headphone port into the microphone port with a 3.5" jack. This did the job, but the sound wasn't perfect.

Is there a way to do this using some software?

Audacity will certainly let you record the sound you are actually hearing through your speakers/headphones...go into your Sounds & Audio->Audio->Sound Recording->Volume, and make sure "Stereo Mix" is selected, then set up Audacity options...:)
