Hi,

I was wondering if you guys could give me a bit of advice.

Is it possible for me to remove my XP home (legit) from this PC and reinstall it on a new PC without having to go through the whole malarky of contacting Microsoft?

Thanks.

Is the version of XP OEM or the full retail version?

You're getting too technical for a muppet like myself!! :D

I have the serial number (sticker on side of current PC) and I also have the disc.

I am thinking if I try to install on new PC will it not give me an invalid serial number warning because the number has already been used

The computer XP is on, was it built by you and installed by you or by a company (i.e Dell).

A local PC company built it for me to my spec (a few years ago). I got the disc when I bought XP to install on another PC that I no longer have at home.

The dics is a bit of a glitzy effort and says:

"Windows XP Home edition" and it has "genuine" at the bottom. Also top left hand corner says "For distribution with a new PC only......"

I think that is an OEM Version of XP.

Therefore it cannot be transferred from Computer to computer. It is tied to the Motherboard.

Computers

OEM refers to software licensed only for a particular system. OEM software is purchased along side a system or hardware parts. Certain OEM programs have limited functionality, but most do not. OEM software is often cheaper than the full versions but not as cheap as academic or student editions.

Looks like you will need to purchase a new version of XP or get Vista ( I would stick with XP :P)

If your edition is OEM then it's tide to the motherboard in which is was original activated on, new motherboard requires new windows.

If your copy is retail then a call to Microsoft should sort this out, belongs it is only installed on omne PC.

You don't need to buy a new version of XP. Install it, phone Microsoft (you don't even talk to anyone these days), get your new key and job done.

That goes against the EULA (End User License Agreement), which is effectively piracy.

Thanks for the replies folks. I will either give Microsoft a call to see were I stand or just get a new version.

It's quite simple really, you need a new OEM licence, there's no ifs no buts, you can't use your existing licence.

Read the sticky for more info
