Well remember when you were picking your uni courses, was it extremly hard for you, or is that just me?

Im currently doing a btec in software development at college(and its really dull), final year starts in september and then its uni or something. They want us to start applying to ucas etc when we come back in september.

The problem im having is i have no idea what course to do or what i want to do in later life. Huddersfield uni does a course called "Interactive multimedia" which sounds really interesting somedays when i think about it, then other days when i think about the course i think its going to be boring, then the next day i'll be really interested again...its strange

anyway, did you have this much trouble trying to think of a course? How did you go about picking one?

I didn't have much trouble picking a course, I knew I wanted to do something with computers so I ended up doing Computer Science at Durham. It's a little different to what I expected, but it's improved my maths skills immensely. I very much enjoy it :)

After having such a fantastic first year at uni I'm convinced I could do any course and still enjoy it!

It was hard for me to decide but ultimately that was because none of them looked very appealing, which should have meant I realised this and took a year out. Sadly I didn't.
However my masters was very easy to choose because I knew/know what I want to do this time round :)

Andr3w I'm in the same situation as you, I don't know whether to head for a more general Business degree, or go into an Advertising or Graphic/Multimedia Design course, which would limit my choices as I don't do art. I've been looking around for joint honours but I don't know what I want to do. Hmph...

Are you starting in 2007? If so come to hudd's uni and do interactive multimedia with me... i cant draw for the life in me, should be fun ! lol

I just picked the two closest Unis to where I lived that did the courses I was interested in and applied for a couple of courses at each.

Haha woo 2007 yeh!

The most likely places for me so far are Chester and Lincoln because they both look really nice, and quite small, my kind of places. I'm sure we'll be alright even though we can't draw. :p

Picking uni courses was pretty easy for me, at the time I wanted to do something in computing and more specifically computer games programming* which decided my uni for me(Abertay Dundee was the only one in Scotland at the time and one of two in the UK if memory serves), I did apply for other courses at different unis but I was pretty much set on Abertay given I already knew my results.

As it turns out I didn't like it so changed to law which makes module selection even easier, there are core subjects that need to be taken for professional qualification so my choices are pretty slim.

*I didn't have the qualifications for Computer Games Technology(AABB at Higher) and I thought I'd applied for Computing with modules in games development. To my great surprise I got accepted for Computer Games Technology anyway because I wrote down the wrong course code but I wasn't about to complain, this is still a source of amusement to my mates who did the course :D

Huddersfield is small and nice, it has me :(

It was easy enough for me because I've had a good idea of what I wanted to do for a long time. I basically just picked 5 unis that were top for the subject (comp sci btw) and one "booby prize" choice. One of those 5 turned me down (funnily enough the others were the better ones), one was too local for me, one I didn't bother looking at because it clashed with the "booby prize" open day (crap reason but there were more reasons). So it was down to just two Bristol and Imperial. Deciding between those two was the hardest part but I eventually decided on Bristol (despite imperial having a better reputation).

Still wouldn't say it was a hard decision though. I find it more difficult deciding what to have for lunch.

My advice to you is that if you aren't sure what you want to do, do something general. If you're sure you want to do something with computers do computer science as it's the most general otherwise do something like a pure science, maths, english, etc.

I didn't really have trouble picking the course, just picking the Universities I wanted to do the course at, so just applied for Mechanical Engineering at 6 different places.

Make sure you go and have a look round departments etc and visit open days for these courses, and you really need to have a feel for what it would be like to study there, and more importantly, what it would be like socially.

Also make sure you're actually sure you want to go to Uni, and you're doing a course that both interests you and will help you get a job after you graduate, as you may find more obscure courses at smaller institutions can hinder job applications compared to say more established places on more broader courses. But that's not always the case, and is a bit of a generalisation.
