Hi everyone,

I am looking to get remote access to a PC...

I want to take control of my home server from a remote location, and I also want to use it to show in-experiences users how to do things from a remote location.

Any suggestions???

Regards,

Steve

We've been using Teamviewer recently.
Pretty sure you can set it to always rrun and auto connect if you wanted to conenct to home tho.
No entirely sure it what you're wanting but makes accessing mates PCs a breeze.

Fantastic software and free :)

If the server is running Pro or above Windows, or indeed, Windows Server you can enable Remote Desktop. It is usually under System Properties [right-click My Computer then click Properties].

You will want to forward the RDP port if you want to access it from the Internet. IIRC it is port 3389 and you will need to forward TCP and UDP packets.

Another option is LogMeIn. This is free to install and use and works very, very well. You can access it via any browser from any computer.

Dont just forward 3389 to a server willy nilly, if you are going to do that then you should lock it down to a single ip/range otherwise its a security risk.

Best bet is VPN in my opinion, when you say you want to show in-expierenced users how to do it, do you mean setting it all up or just how to connect once setup?

teamviewer works a treat - it's free as well.

Managed to sort my dad's pc for 50 miles away last night, saves a 1 hour trip when he breaks something!! (which happens a lot!!)

Thanks for adding this! Was in a rush this morning so forgot to mention security.

Cheers for the answers guys!

-Neither I just want to be able to take over their screen as if I was there.
I have been roped into teaching a couple of young lads how to use computers (starting with how to copy and paste!), and I live miles away, I think this is the best way to do it.

Not sure which is best: win remote desktop... a couple of questions or TeamViewer...

does win xp home have the remote desktop function? can it be added on if not? can you set it to auto accept a request? does anyone know a good tutorial I can use to get it up and running?

I do not want to pay for VPN hardware, and it is a bit excessive for me, i will just use the restricted MAC addresses.

cheers

Ste

What can someone do if you just use the default port? Don't they have to crack your windows password to do anything?

To connect to your own machine..

logmein

To connect to another machine when someone else is at it (ie, they can accept the connection)

teamviewer

+1 for this. I use logmein to my PC at home as the work firewall doesn't allow RDC to my home machine.

In that case I suggest teamviewer, I introduced work to it and we jumped all over it. Works everytime.

also, RDC only allows one user to be logged in so they wont be able to see what you're doing on their screens, probably not so helpful for what you need

Seems like the survey says: Teamviewer!

Thanks for the help guys, I will not doubt have to come back for some security questions, but thanks for the great help!
