Hey folks,

I did some work for a company that had a simple requirement, which, in short, was to set up a small server, install Windows 2012 R2 Foundation, and then enable a SINGLE off-site computer, to be able to RDP on to that machine, and run a bit of software on it.

I have done all of it, tested it, all works, but it seems to be on a time limit... Everytime I restart the server it will remind me that

“Remote Desktop Licensing mode is not configured”
‘Remote desktop services will stop working in x days’

When I purchased Foundation 2012 R2 the retailer told me it already has 2 licenses built in, and that if I am using just one computer to log into it, I won't need to purchase any license CAL's.

When I enter RD Licensing Manager, all I see is;

The server, then under 'license version and type'

It says;

Windows 2000 Server - Built-in TS Per Device CAL - Total licenses - Unlimited

Nothing else is there, I am guessing there should be a 2012 license in there somewhere?

In the Server manager > Remote desktop services > Overview, if I click on RD Licensing, it shows as;

'Per user' (it is not set to per device)
The server itself being the RDP license server

I am going round in circles, as the retailer seems to be clueless, and I cannot find any Microsoft numbers that help the end user as such for this.

It all seems to be pointing towards me needing to install a license CAL on the server, even though I was told I would not need to?

Can anyone help? :(

I see, that sounds like it may be what I need, as the person who will RDP on remotely will use an administrator login and password to do so.
So in theory then I can turn off the Remote Desktop services role part so that message disappears and I can just use it as administrator to log in from the remote computer?
