Ok so, im in student accomo atm. In the past few weeks I had my bike stolen (and recovered as i caught them and phoned police) but last night my mates was stolen from the back yard (it was locked up, they snipped the wire)

Now, our back yard is of an ok size, with a fence along the back with a gate in, and then a small parking area for 2 cars (gravel).

The gate is shocking, it provides NO security, it has a bolt on it, but, the 1foot gap between it and the side fence allows someone to walk through (if they squeeze sideways) or easily look through and unbolt the gate.

Are we within any rights to make the landlord fix this situation? Its a joke at best (i can take pics later if needed) and now with 2 robberies (the guys who stole mine were also done for attempted burglary when they were caught with my bike... so potential burglaries) I'm seriously concerned with the lack of security and protection here :/

I don't think there's any legal obligation for the landlord to provide security. Most will automatically to make the house more desirable to prospective tenants, but if you're in an area with more demand than supply, they won't bother.

Stick it in the house?

no room for 4 bikes. Could maybe manage one but at a push..

We just phoned the landlord and hes gonna pop over. (hes a good guy and usually helps us out so hopefully itll get sorted.)

im more worried about the lack of security to the rear of the actual house. Old windows/doors etc.

landlords gonna get us a proper chain (he says, hes just popped over) which is fair cop :)

im also gonna get an alarmed one, and i think the rest of us will to, and i think we will be getting a proper chain and a good few padlocks too.

My bikes a GT avalanche 3 (few years old but still a good bike), the others are just saracen, etc.
