I am currently lodging in a semi with a homeowner but want to take out insurance to cover my contents - does anyone know if I can get insurance to do just this or do I have to get insurance to cover the house as well? When I am trying out some quotes I am not able to select the amount of cover for contents I actually want. I only need about 5k worth but the minimum I am allowed to select seems to be 20k plus which is simply too much. Are there any specialist insurance companies that deal with small content amounts for people who rent/lodge that you know of?

£5k sounds like a low amount to cover even personal possessions. Remember you're insuring against total loss, so that's everything you own, clothes, cd's, dvd's as well as big things like PC's, TV's and Hi-fi equipment.

Most companies that specified really low amounts will probably cost as much as a standard insurer for the bare minimum anyway.

I moved oop north with the bare minimum tbh and have gone for the whole minimalist vibe - the only true expensive items are my watch and PC!

I would struggle to think of possessions I have totalling over £5k. There are places that do contents insurance if you're renting a room etc. eg Endsleigh do one which doesn't have a stupid amount, but it does ask lots of questions which I don't know the answer to - and I'm not sure they're the best place if you actually need to claim.

edit: yeh endsleigh minimum is 3000 and you can cover yourself in a shared house

I think I may be able to go thru a loophole and get it as student insurance since I am post grad mature student finishing my masters part time - just got my dissertation to do now. The premiums have now plummeted which is what I like! :) I just thought it was silly to insure the whole house where as a student I can now just do my room - Cheers guys :)

TBH with the amount it costs for contents insurance why not just go with a big name and get tons of cover? I am covered for something stupid like £30,000 through nationwide (just offered as a "basic" level of cover over the phone) and it costs £6pm.

Not the biggest of my expenses!

our insurance is with LloydsTSB, and it's £11 per month, that covers total contents with single items up to £2,500 - most expensive items we have are our laptops, so it more than covers everything
