repairing an OS X tiger hdd - help needed

hi i have an illegal name error on my startup drive but it says the only way to repair is to insert the install cd and hold option key until it allows you to select the bootup device.

trouble is it always boots straight into os x, ive tried everything.

can anyone help me pls?

Hold down Option, (alt on my k/b) as you turn on the power, it will search for all possible boot sorces.

Or just hold C to start from the CD/DVD
