Replace 12 yr old MOBO or not?

Hi all,

I was just saying the other day how great it was that my old Chillblast desktop PC bought 2009 had lasted me 12 years (admittedly with a couple of upgrades in the meantime). Sure enough I must have cursed it because since yesterday it refused to post. Tested with a spare PSU and still the same so I suspect the MOBO is dead. I suppose it had a good innings!

So I'm looking for advice. I'm not flush with cash at the moment (children) so if there was a cheap way (under £100) of just replacing the MOBO and keeping my existing components I would opt for that right now. But if I'd just be throwing good money after bad then I'm prepared to spend around £500 on a new base system.

My current setup:
  • Asus P6T Deluxe V2 X58 Motherboard Socket LGA1366 (now dead RIP)
  • Intel Core i7 920 2.66GHz nehalem
  • Akasa Nero Quiet CPU Cooler
  • 3 x 2GB = 6GB DDR3 1333MHz Memory
  • Powercolor Radeon HD 4870 512MB PCI Express
  • Scithe 700W PSU 80 Bronze Plus
  • Samsung 840 EVO SSD 250GB
  • Lots of HDDs inherited over the years
  • DVD-RW drive
  • Antec Three Hundred ATX Black Case - would be happy to reuse
  • Acer H243HX 24-inch LCD (VGA, DVI, HDMI inputs) - happy with it

My usage these days is web browsing, image editing and basic gaming - Company of Heroes, Factorio are current faves. I've not got time at the moment (children) for latest titles and super graphics.

Any advice would be much appreciated!

Thank you everyone for the advice so far, much appreciated.

I've had a look at the X58 boards from China and also a couple of second hand ones in the UK, but they aren't cheap cheap so on balance I think it might be time to upgrade to a new base unit that I can afford right now, but might have some expansion options when I have more cash available in future for a proper GPU (after prices stabilise) and maybe a PCIe4 SSD.

I had a look at the B550 MOBO suggested by @Craig_d1 - the MSI MPG B550 GAMING PLUS (I don't need onboard Wifi). Although it wouldn't pull up trees would it be even possible to put my ancient Powercolor Radeon HD 4870 512MB PCI Express (it's PCI Express 2.0 x16) in that MOBO to tide me over until I can afford a new GPU? Or would it not even be compatible? Forgive my ignorance!

If using the old graphics card is a non-starter would the combination of **B Grade** AMD Ryzen 5 3600 plus Inno3D GeForce GTX 1050Ti Twin X2 V2 4096MB suggested by @Joxeon be better than one of these new fangled (to me anyway!) Ryzen APU chips like the Ryzen 5 3400G, or the new 5600G which is due to come out soon I believe?

My children are only 5 and 2 by the way so no serious gaming yet! I've just introduced the 5 year old to a Raspberry Pi with Minecraft which she likes. No doubt their tastes will develop with time but I'd rather buy them their own machine than have them dominate mine in future!
