Replacing an IXUS500 - Advice please

Hi,

My 2 year old IXUS500 has developed the E18 error on the weekend. After reading through it seems I might as well replace it

But with what? We'd like something slim and light, we mainly use it for indoor pics, would like IS and it should be easy to use for a 10 year old too. Budget is 200 quid to include a spare battery and a 2GB card as well.

Would welcome any advice.

Thanks,

NC.

You could *just* about get an Ixus 800 IS for £200 but the SD card and battery would put you over (but not by much).

I think the Ixus 800 IS would be a good match so worth saving a bit more or waiting a bit longer.

Thanks for the reply Gord.

Is it not an overkill to go for the 800? I mean we haven't really used any of the features the 500 had to offer, just a classic case of point and shoot!

Go just a little over your budget and get the superb IXUS 850IS. I've owned an IXUS 400, 500, 700 and now an 850IS. Worth having just for its wide-angle lens, but offers IS, face recognition and superb image quality.

Spie - how is the 850 in terms of battery consumption? the 500 was terrible at that. Also is it different in size and weight?

There really isn't many feature changes between the 500 and the 800 but you do get a better lens, a larger (read better) sensor, a better screen and of course IS. Think of it as more of a quality upgrade than a more "advanced" camera.

If it is worth it is a question only you can answer. Of course, you could go the 2nd hand or refurb route and get a lesser Ixus model but if you are going to go new then the 800 IS or 850 IS as Spie has said would be my choice.

Thanks again Gord. I've read the reviews on the 850IS and it does rate very high.

Any other brands I should be looking at? Don't mind staying with Canon, but I hate to see another 200 quid going down the drain with a different "error 18"...

My knowledge of pocket sized compacts outside of Canon is fairly limited so can't really recommend anything.

As for the error 18 problem, remember you will have warranty with a new camera.

I'm a canon fanboy
2gb sd card is less than £20 and the ixus 70 is a lovely piece of kit if you want small and P&S
ixus just keep getting better and better for me

p.s anyone seen a sub compact with some manual features?
haven't seen much since my old K-M kd-420z, also the Minolta G400
:(

I remember the 500 was bad. Battery consumption is in a different league on the 850IS. I took over 600 shots on holiday before it needed charging.

I'm still using my IXUS 500 leather case for my 850IS.

A quick Google :-

Dimensions of Canon IXUS 500 digital Compact Camera is (w x h x d) 87.0 x 57.0 x 27.8 mm
Weight 185 g (6.5 oz.)

IXUS 850 - Dimensions (WxDxH) 90 mm x 25 mm x 58 mm
Weight 150 g

The Ixus70\75 are both within my budget and weigh 30g less than the 850IS. In terms of everyday usage - what do I really miss if going for one of those?

I think I'm going for the IXUS 70. Read couple of reviews and all is positive. I really don't want to spend more than 200 quid again, so the 850IS is out of my budget.

Have seen a refurbished one. Has anyone bought refurbished cameras before?
