Hello,
My rear wheel on my bike is knackerd, several spokes are broken and its heavily buckled.

I need to replace it!

But am unsure how...

Obviously I can buy a new wheel, but the bit that confuses me is the gears....

How do I detach these from the current wheel? If I even can? Will I have to buy a special rear wheel? or are front and rear the same?

Please help as this is my method of transport to work and getting the bus is rubbish :/

Thanks

Hi,

The gears are connected to the "hub" of the wheel, you will keep the entire hub assembly and replace the rim and any knackered spokes.

If you have never done this before, i recommend that you leave the wheel into a local bike shop as there is a skill in getting the new rim straight (not buckled)

The spokes actually hold the rim straight and need to be tightened individually to assure a non buckled wheel.

Hope that helps

Yeah this helps very much guys, Ive done some work on the bike before but only minor stuff, will have to take it in to get sorted :/.

Any idea on a ball park figure for a price to get this sorted? Baring in mind the wheel will probably need to be replaced.

Will I need to take the whole bike in to get sorted? Or would it be enough to just take the rear wheel in?

If you've got a good local bike shop they might re-rim your existing wheel, since the rest of it probably still works fine, but I expect most of them will go for the lazy option and just sell you a whole new wheel. A new wheel complete with hub and gears is about £80 in my local. They are of the lazy type, for the record.
