Hi Folks,

Firstly. I am new to the forum and to overclocking. Having done of a bit of research into the subject I decided to have a go at clocking my i5-750.

I only use the computer for Flight Simulator x (with scenery addons etc) so smooth frame rates are key. The spec is:

i5-750 3.0 GHz using quick boost

4 GB Corsair DDR3

1.5TB HDD

ATI 5770 (o/c to 88OMHz GPU and 965MHz mem.)

Gigabyte P55-US3L board

Freezer 7 pro rev.2 cooler

.................................................. .........................................

I have overclocked the i5 to 3.6 Ghz (180 x 20) and it is currently running at about 36C idle and 60C with Flight Sim.

I have used Prime 95 and tested for around 4 hours with no probs - max temp under full-load was 65C.

The questions are;

a) are the temperatures OK ?

b) is this a reasonable o/c for a first go?

c) can I get any more from the i5 and therefore get even better and more stable framerates for FSX?

Many Thanks in advance for any input / advice

Steve

a) 65 after 4 hours is fine temp wise. what voltage are you using at these settings? people on some other forums are saying 70 is very safe at load, whereas 80 might be pushing it a bit :D

b) 3.6 is a mighty fine first effort, congratz!

c) your motherboard is plenty capable, and most 750s will do about 4ghz, however, the weak link in your case will be the cooler, which as you start throwing more volts at it will soon not be able to cope, so if you really want to go further, I would suggest a meatier cooler with some nice fans on.

I found a screenshot with someone using the same MoBo at ~4.2ghz, no idea if that was stable or not though.

looking around there are some guides like this one for tweaking FSX for better performance, have you tried these sort of approaches as well?

Hi and thanks for the reply.

The Vcore is set at 1.175V and seems to be stable at that. 65C seems like a temp that I feel comfortable with - any higher may cause issues.

Thanks for the FSX link - there is so much talk out there about what is best for FSX . I have come to the conclusion that each setup is unique and what works for one may not work for another. Think I will stick with 3.6 and run for while.

Now all I have to do is tweak the 5770 card........

Thanks again
