Request to buy stuff on behalf of someone else

You shouldn't be dealing with members Out of M&M. There is a reason the M&M is strict & that is to protect it's Members like you so Quit it Now !!!
Yes I am serious.

Changed paypal password just in case anyway and had a bit of a panic when I couldn't log in too, then realised I had the Caps lock button down. Doh. I can't see how a button would be such a security risk as you do see them around the internet. Nevertheless I will be wary of that paypal button thing in future. Thanks.

User name is Casterina, he/she has a few posts asking for help with his/her system build, all seemed genuine with slightly broken english. He/She may be totally legit and probably is and I refunded the payment he/she made. Full payments were made and they weren't £1.

I might offer one of my PWM converters on the MM to see if it drums up any interest, seems to be a real smooth system from my limited experience of it.

I can't remember who it was, but someone here sent me something like £300 to buy them a digital SLR off another forum on which they didn't have access to the classifieds section. They did it via bank transfer, I bought the camera, sent it to them and didn't ask for anything in return for my time/effort. Some people are very trusting, but luckily I'm not a dishonest *****. Nice to help people out, but I wouldn't let them use Paypal for this sort of thing.

I assume you mean Casterina as you've given him advice recently.

As he doesn't have MM access I assume he's asking you to buy from the OcUK shop.

Is he asking you to have stuff delivered directly from OcUK to his address so he can get free delivery?

Hmmm, I am not sure, but I do know that I cannot pay OCUK with PayPal either.

My PayPal account is of good standing and I was trying to use a PayPal confirmed method of payment (my debit card associated with a confirmed bank account). Every time I tried OCUK would say they could not take payment as my address was not confirmed......(!!??)

Well yes it is confirmed and has been for ages and I have used Paypal for many things since moving into a new house just over a year ago. But the website just would not accept payment! (Very frustrating :( ) Edit - I also tried using a confirmed credit card too, but that was declined also.

It could be that this individual is having the same problem.

However, it could be that it is some kind of scam, so with that doubt in mind I would steer clear. Also, I hope beyond hope that he has not been paying you with anything other than PayPal gift, otherwise he will be able to start a dispute and possibly get the money back.

Also beware with PayPal especially if, when you go to log in, you get a 'pop-up' screen asking to confirm your details - address, bank account etc).

I had a piece of spyware on my PC that did that and nothing could find it and a google search showed up nothing either (I think it must have been new). I had to boot into safe mode and run the latest Malwarebytes on full scan to get it! I was instantly suspicious as the pop up was asking for my social security number, which we don't have in the UK.

I should point out that this was not a website divert either. The pop up activated as soon as you clicked the sign in button on the legitimate PayPal site.

Cheers

So here's a strange one.

A 100 post or so, zero trust, forum member contacts me to make them a PWM converter circuit and we agree a price. He says he can't pay straight via Paypal for some reason and needs a Paypal button made, so I do it and he pays. No problem. Money in my paypal account.

Today he asks if I can buy a £13 fan off OcUK website for him, again stating that he can't use his card and OcUK paypal doesn't work for him. I send him another button and he pays the money into my paypal account.

Very easy, very trusting.

Then it occurs to me that this could be a bit dodgy.

Am I being taken for a ride here? Or am I being too cautious?

I know it's only £20 but it's still £20 that I've had to work for.

All help appreciated.

I wouldn't play the third party for someone else so they can buy things. If something goes wrong its your paypal account and you who has to deal with the problems and possibly be chased by paypal for money.

I accepted a payment once for a friend on Paypal and transferred it on to him. A month later there was a chargeback and I was the one dealing with it and if I had lost I would have had to pay all the money back, when I never received any.

sounds to me like they're avoiding delivery charges. can't comment on whether they're trying to scam you but saving a few quid on delivery is always a bonus!

i would put a stop to it though and change your passwords a few times over the next few weeks.
