Resurrecting the ZS: With pictures

Quick update, not got much done due to the snow.

Have ordered the following, some has arrived and some hasn't yet, as I ordered it in drips and drabs.

- Inlet/Exhaust manifold gasket
- Cambelt tensioner
- Cambelt idler
- Cambelt
- Fuel injection pump tensioner
- Fuel injection pump belt
- Water pump
- 4x Ice White headlight bulbs
- Camshaft cover gasket
- Anaerobic sealant to rebuild camshaft carrier assembly
- Auxiliary drive belt
- Threadlock compound
- Injector to head sealing washers
- 3 Layer head gasket (slight decompression, but it's the one normally used)
- 282mm vented disc brake calipers, discs and pads

It's all coming together, won't be long!

Cheers mate, it's not been easy but I feel it's only fair to the car - I've hammered it for the last 30k odd and despite the bad rep they get, the only faults with the car have been my own doing.

Time to give something back! :)

Progress.

Got the camshaft carrier out of the ZS, and ready to fit to the new head.
The problem is, I found quite heavy evidence of an oil leak from the camshaft oil seal:

Cleaned up the head to camshaft carrier mating face:

Also, had a go at cleaning the camshaft carrier assembly:

I also had another go at cleaning up the head to a good finish... :)

Getting there....

Fair play to you:) Have some man-points!

I've got a new head for the 320i arriving today, am going to be doing a similar job to that. Once i've sorted out the fact that I can see the road through about three different holes in my car. :(

Looking good Matty! thought I recognised the username from the Xpower forums.
If you need any bits I'm off to a scrappy near me next week who has a couple of Zed's in, and I've got a few bits left off my old MkI as well.

Alex

Cheers guys, it's been a lot of tough work but it'll be worth it.

More of a learning curve than anything, and hopefully with all the work done I'll be up to my target of 160bhp and 280lb/ft too which is a bonus.

Will be re-fitting the bare head (no cam carrier on Tuesday, and working forward from there over the coming weeks.

I need to make a tough call - another swift change in circumstances means my needs are changing yet again. I hate change! I might find my self sat in a dirty diesel once again come May, but who knows.

Trouble is they turn into a giant kite if there is any wind.

We found this at Silverstone last year. Storm + gazebo = epic fail.

Anyway...

Boxes of parts ready to go on:

Cleaning the head; partly done:

This is what I faced - quite bad rust due to no head for a while:

Cleaned up, finally!:

Head bolts - damn thick compared to something like a K series.

I gave each one a quick clean, the coated threads with oil to aid refitting.

Fitting each bolt loosely:

All back on and tightened down. It's terrifying putting 65nm on each bolt, then 90 degrees and then an additional 90 degrees!

Waterpump housing. The old waterpump was totally knackered.

All back on.
