Retail Credit/debit card situation

Maybe im too soft but it seems harsh but rules are rules and its my inheritance to protect from fraud :D

All it would do is give you a false sense of security.

If a guy pays with a card that says "Mr" on it, do that automatically mean it's his card? Of course not. Either photo ID everyone, or don't bother at all.

I suspect any fraudsters would use the correct gender anyway.

Letting them do it is fraud, and as stated above if your aquiring bank found out they would remove your merchant facilities.

There is no question of accepting them or not, DO NOT DO IT! (unless you want to watch your business disappear very swiftly!)

do you not use chip and pin?

surely you shouldnt be handling the customers cards to notice the name in the first place

Chip and pin is designed to place the blame on the card holder. If someone else knows your PIN it's your fault. That said, if the PIN was wrong and they needed to sign for it - the signature wouldn't match the card so you wouldn't be able to accept it - then it's on you.

Actually the merchant account provider still expects you to check these things (its in the tiny weany print many pages through the contract terms)

You're probably likely to lose more money through lost customers than you ever would for fraud by refusing cards like that.

If he lets the above go ahead knowingly that it isn't the persons card being used, then he is in knowledge of a fraudulent act which can happen in losing merchant accounts with the banks, if its investigated.

No, using someone elses credit card with their permission is not fraud. The definition of fraud in the fraud act 2006 is quite clear. And unless he asks for every customers passport then for all he knows everyone could be using someone elses card if they have the same gender.

Hmmm, lose 1-2 customers or knowingly allow someone to commit fraud.....

Decisions decisions.

Did you read the op? He states that it keeps happening, so we are not talking about 1-2 customers, nor would he know that someone is comitting fraud...

Couldnt you just not look at the card, I cant remember the last time someone at a till saw or asked to see my name off the card before I stuck it in the machine
