Returning a Console to Store

Some parts of Halo Reach on my 360 drop to below 10fps for quite a while :/ On my mates it doesnt drop at all in the same bits.

Anyway, guess I'll just have to sell it on Ebay for 98% of the price I bought it for. Some idiot is bound to pay it.

It's a console - they're all functionally exactly the same, which is the entire point. Your new Halo console runs exactly the same as one bought back on launch day.

It won't just drop fps unless it's a software bug. An xbox is not a PC. It's not running Windows updates and anti-virus in the background, or needing a driver update. It's an appliance, like a toaster.

Truth.

My console knowledge is low but would it make a difference playing on a 60" TV compared to a 24" TV though?

Nope as the TV handles the picture. The only difference is what hd res you set the 360 to. Even then I am not sure what difference if any it would make to the performance of the game.

They'll test it as you wait and find nothing wrong with it.

Why dont you live with the consequences of your purchasing decisions rather than expecting somebody else to pay for your mistake?

Why don't you stop patronising me and stop thinking that the world runs on some sort of upstanding moral code.

Don't be silly. It's a closed fixed-spec platform. They don't randomly put slower CPUs and GPUs in certain consoles :D

Don't be silly. Console components aren't magically different from every other electrical component; components subjectable to any number of possible faults that could cause them to run at less than optimum specifications. You're on an overclockers forum, so surely you understand the possibility of overheating, or power distribution problems; all feasible, yet rare, problems on a console.

Just sell it on ebay, although you will get nowhere near the price you bought it for. What's the commission these days, 10%? Plus PayPal fees, and postage you will be lucky to get 70% back.

If it is running slowly as you suggest then that is a fault with the unit and you should be able to return it.

I don't understand people mocking him about the console running slow. There could be many factors to why this is happening, faulty memory being one or heat sink not correctly seated, maybe overheating.

Take it back to the shop and have them test it.

RE: running slow.....could it simply be that your friend has ripped his game to his hard drive and you were running off the disk? That will make a fair difference in load times etc. I don't pretend to be any kind of expert in this but from my own experiences if there was a problem with the 360 hardware wise, it would have shown some kind of screen corruption, error code or even just RROD......I've never seen nor heard of one doing something inbetween such as slowing down (that's not to say it's not technically possible but I find it hard to believe given what we know about the 360)

Doubtful it's dependant on the res either as I believe every game is rendered at what ever specific res it was designed for then is either upscaled or downscaled by the 360 depending on what res your screen is.

As for returning it, not sure they will accept it to be honest. From my POV it looks like you've just bought the console and game simply to play that game and now that you're done with it you want your money back....if that's how it looks to me then there's quite a hight chance the guy behind the counter in GAME will probably think the same thing.

If I were you I'd just sell it on "As New complete with full warranty". As you've said it's basically brand new so you should get a half decent price for it

No, you cannot return it because it is used and there is nothing wrong with it. If you claim it is faulty they will test it. Why should they refund you?

They used to have an excellent returns policy but it was stopped as it was abused by people who decided to use them as a free version of a rental company.

Sell your Xbox as second hand, as this is what it is.

Couldn't agree more, I remember the days they were very helpful with returns. I knew a person who started using it as a rental service and was eventually told to bugger off.

If they overheat they switch off and throw up two red lights, they don't start running slow. In fact, if there are any faults they do one of (or a combination of) these things (ignoring DVD drive faults):

- Don't boot at all and show 3 red lights.
- Boot, but show 1 red light and display a black screen with 'system error' an a corresponding 'E' code.
- Graphics corruption.
- Freezing/lockups/restarts.

I have loads of experience with these consoles and have repaired hundreds, I have never come across one that is 'running slow'.

Correct. The game is rendered internally at the resolution the developer has chosen, the xbox then scales this up or down at the output stage depending on your TV output settings. It makes no difference whatsoever to performance.

Lol.

My last 360 ('07 model 20gb) kept overheating and resetting every half hour but never displayed any red light or onscreen error warning. I guess that's just how the consoles are designed then?

I had mine sent back and replaced due to the heat sink not being seated properly.

Just because you have never come across such a problem, it doesn't mean it doesn't exist. That also doesn't mean the guy is talking porkys.

Do you work in the manufacturing of Xbox 360 by any chance?

I use to work part time at a Toys R Us and I use to spend most of my time argueing with customers who thought they could return anything.

I've had this Xbox360 for 3 months only used it twice, decided I don't want it but don't have the reciept can I have my cash back please?

If there is a fault the shop should try and repair it, or get it sent off for you to be repaired. If they can't repair it they should offer a replacement, if the item is out of stock or the customer was nice I'd offer a refund.

My 360 in on it's way out, sister dropped it in a rage and now it sometimes refuses to read my backup copies sometimes. A quick turn off and on again and it works fine though.
