Rift: Planes of Telera Beta

Getting a lot of performance issues, everyone seems to be, gameplay is incredibly slick though, if they can sort out the performance, the gameplay isn't going to need very much polishing and the game will be releasing in an incredibly strong state

Quests are the same old boring crap as they are in every other mmo. Performance is pretty terrible on my system. Being hugely cpu capped, getting about 20 fps and my gpu is only reaching 33% load.

The classes are neat and provide a lot of scope for customization. WIll have to see what the PvP is like and if the rifts and invasions will be as epic as marketed cause so far the PvE is pretty bland.

I don't even know if I'm allowed to talk about stuff like this? But what ever.

Oh yeah also suffering from the same thing I suffer from in warhammer; attacks don't feel very responsive. Like instant casts are definitely not instant, might be because the servers are US but even when it says I have 160ms it doesn't feel as responsive as I would like.

Right then, performance is terrible, there is definitely something wrong, I get the same fps on extra low as I do on ultra high, and that is sub 20fps in most places, the classes seem well done, no complaints there, and the progression system is pretty clever, im not sure about letting everyone be 3 classes though, can't help feeling it'll just lead to everyone being able to do everything...

Questing is your standard MMO fare, certainly no innovations here (except a fairly cool aoe looting function), but they were never suggesting there would be.

In terms of the rifts, I've seen a few, but it's been hard to judge them really, largely due to the fact that as soon as one opens, several hunderd (no joke) people run over to look around, however, they do seem to be near identical to WAR's public quests, but without the story elements, I think these will depend on how they work come release with lower player densities, apparently they can move around, and attack towns and stuff, not seen anything like that yet myself, they seem pretty gimmicky thus far.

I'm interested in the pvp mainly, it seems to be the only thing coming up with decent rvr combat besides GW2, so i'm hopeful that it works out well. Basically,

tl;dr

Very polished, not very revoluntionary and right now, performs like utter crap.

Nothing wrong with my performance, must be a driver specific issue. I've quite impressed with the whole thing so far, very slick and looks extremely comprehensive. Reminds me a bit of the guild wars (1) beta, that had the same slick, finished feel to it.

yeah having performance issues too but guess its a ati thing?

its very polished but the combat is very meh

also just saw it has achivements like wow so that is a instant turn off for me

If you check the forums, there are hundreds of people all with the same issue, on a huge variety of very powerful cards, personally I have a 5850, handles just about any game at max like a dream (Metro 2033 just about the only exception) and this game, I get ~20 fps on max with AA off at 1680 x 1050, ludicrous, I think it's their engine, it's the same as in WAR and that gave me 30-40 when a lot of people were about, and this game is using an aweful lot more visual effects, lighting, shadows e.t.c. They need to fix this though because it seems like a majority, or at least a large minority are suffering from the poor performance.

I'm not saying it isn't a problem, just that it isn't the engine, it's more like they haven't optimised it for a particular chipset or driver version or something, or more likely there's one specific thing that's not implemented properly that's killing performance for a cross section of players. As long as they take note of the complaints and do something about it, that's what a beta's for.

I'm on a 5770 here, although I'm a driver version or two behind the current one.

I got an invite via email earlier today, is this one worth it if i don't like WoW and WAR only entertained me with it's PvP? Everything i read always points to those two.

Runs on WARs engine, so feels an aweful lot like that in terms of Movement, Animations, Combat, World Design, 'borrows' lots of things from WoW, a little from EQ2. It's OK, but nothing more, may as well download the beta at least though.

That doesn't sound so bad as i did like the fluidity of combat in WAR, just the game overall didn't deliver.

I'll download it when i go to bed tonight and perhaps give it a bash tomorrow once the wife takes the kids out.

The amount of classes and class sub-specs is amazing in Rift, never seen anything like it.
My big worry is it would take a team of pvp/pve wizards to balance the game around so much diversity.
