Right, what to see in Canada?

While in the area, make sure you visit Lake Louise.
Jasper, Lake Louise, Banff, Moraine Lake, Calgary, etc. are all in the same area of Alberta.

Another vote for Lake Louise.

I went snowboarding at Lake Louise for two weeks in 2009. I can honestly say it's the best holiday i've been on, and one of the most beautiful places i've seen.

Give Calgary a miss - it's pretty rubbish.

I honestly don't know, that's why this thread is so vague! At the minute, i'm kind of thinking of seeing where everything is that i'd want to see, and then see if a route turns up from them. if not, then i'll narrow it down to cities or what not.

Now, my geography is terrible, and haven't a clue which regions are french speaking or not. Will it be a problem (not a problem, but a hinderence (sp?) ) that i can't speak french?

It's a lot of distance to cover if you're going East to West (or vice versa) but if you've got plenty of time and don't mind how you get there then you might be able to do it reasonably cheaply.

Quebec is the main French speaking region - opinions are varied on it. It's a bit of a funny place - not French enough for the French but too French for the rest of Canada. Having said that I've met a few people from Montreal and they've all been very nice. It may well be a bit of a hinderance not speaking French there but if you're willing to make a bit of effort and attempt it then the chances are you'll be fine.

As in the ski resort?

Not really interested in skiing. Too expensive for students :p

Whistler is also huge on mountain biking in the summer as well as just being a spectacular part of the World, the only time I've been up there I saw a bear cub while I was on the chairlift.

Montreal is a great city. Good food, very scenic and the people are very friendly. Most people in Montreal can speak English and don't have a problem if you'd prefer to communicate in English.

I honestly don't think we'll have the time to do east to west. I've never even looked at the logistics of how we're going to get from place to place. So, we might start half way or whatever,

Jealous :p Canada is the one place I really want to go, I'd rent a canoe and do a week long trip, anywhere. The country was built on the back of men in canoes, would be a disservice to them not see the country as they would have :) That may be a bit expensive though what with renting kit and a hiring guide if you have no experience :(

My bro said Vancouver was good when he went :)

USA was built on the back of men with rifles shooting down indians, do you suggest when we go visit New York we start shooting people so as not to do a disservice to the settlers? LOL, had to mention it.

Also, if someone hasn't been out with a canoe before it's a bit irresponsible to suggest they take a week off alone with it. They'd probably end up drowned, killed by a bear or stranded somewhere and die of thirst/hunger.
