People in the UK didn't loot and burn businesses and homes in the Great Depression - when poverty, unemployment and health were far worse. What has changed? The moral fiber of society.

We had riots, in fact they were far more common prior to WW2 than today.

There were mass riots against unemployment and poverty in London during the 1880's and 1930's during economic downturns.

Difference was because they had no-where else to turn to back then. Today's riots are examples on scum on the rampage.

I don't disagree with you, only pointing out that stating there were no riots due to economic factors prior to WW2 is incorrect, all things being equal we have far less riots these days than then, I accept that rioting is not the only issue here however.

Bigger box!
Absolute disgrace.

Plenty of businesses have sacked it off and are never to reopen. Even branches of huge chains like Blockbuster, Currys and JD Sports are staying closed.

Fortunately, there is a HUGE effort going into apprehending those who can be identified from footage, a greta deal of intelligence is being gathered regarding those involved and more than a token few are getting their doors put in.

Many, many more arrests to come and for once the courts are treating criminals with the contempt they deserve.
Almost everyone charged is remanded to appear in court and those convicted are getting good sentences.

Plenty of old bill making good money in overtime too, which I'm sure will be gladly pumped back into our economy over the next few months. :D

That isn't true though, is it - there is an enormous amount of help available for people whatever their circumstances.

Doesn't matter what colour you are either. Actually probably i would say if you are black and well presented and make an effort to be articulated, pull your trousers up off your lower butt cheek, you probably even have a better chance at getting the job than a white man... Espeically in some industries..

There's simply NO EXCUSE.

It is not always easy to access that help and it is sometimes dependent on where you live and whether you fit very specific criteria.

Not that it in anyway excuses such behaviour.

Mr Brake told the BBC's Newsnight that some of those convicted had received sentences which would have been different if they had committed the same crime the day before the riots.

...and so it should be! They were part of a riot, so that needs to be taken into consideration! If they had committed the offence the day before, then they would not have been part of a riot! Simple!

Not been to Japan then. American culture is blatantly apparent everywhere. Thats not to mention the Chinatown's and Koreatown's and other foreign enclaves within many Japanese cities including Western ones. Take Nagasaki for example, that city was founded by Portuguese traders and their and other Western influence and culture is everywhere including churches and bulidings.
Nagasaki is not a good example. It was the one port foreigners were restricted to trade with during the period of isolation (17th-19th century), so as to prevent foreign influence in the rest of Japan while still exchanging goods and information through that one port. Of course it is going to have foreign influence, more than anywhere else. And AFAIK it was not founded by the Portuguese, it was a pre-existing city that the Portuguese sailed into to trade.

No question however that American influence is widespread. Being occupied by the USA will certainly have that effect. However, Japan has a very strict immigration policy compared to a lot of other places in the world, especially the Western world.

I wonder if Castiel has ever actually been to Japan. The culture from the outsider would look very much westernized but when you're in there you realised that it's very very much their own. It's a different animal entirely!

Nagasaki was not a pre existing city in the 16th century. It was a small fishing village until the Portuguese founded their port and the city grew around that in 1543. By 1549 the Jesuits had founded a Christian mission and began to spread Catholicism throughout Japan.

It was not 1637 that the shogunate outlawed Christianity and during the Meijii period from 1868 the spread of churches and Western European influence gained popularity once again. These events and the western architecture relating to these events is why Nagasaki has been submitted for Unesco Heritage site status.

You are correct with the Sakoku policy under the Tokugawa Shogunate where all foreign trade and contact was banned, with the exception of the Nagasaki port.

No question however that American influence is widespread. Being occupied by the USA will certainly have that effect. However, Japan has a very strict immigration policy compared to a lot of other places in the world, especially the Western world.

Indeed, no-one is questioning their immigration policy, just pointing out that their culture has been significantly influenced from other outside cultures, in particular Western ones over the last few centuries.

I have been to Japan 7 times in the last decade. Including Nakasaki.

Their culture is their own and you are right it is very different from British Culture, just as French Culture is different from British Culture and Spanish Culture and so on, however it is heavily influenced by western and in particular American culture which if you have visited yourself you would know.

I will say that the best part of Japanese culture is the fact that it is deemed very rude to use mobile phones and having loud conversations on public transport, a pet hate of mine. :)
