Road Cycling

For the first time in ages I actually have a weekend club ride planed. Woot.

12 folks signed up for 60 miles of hills with some through and off in between. A proper training session rather than a club ride.

I've given my best bike the once over, oiled it, inflated the tyres... So, you know, it'll be bucketing when I get up for our ride tomorrow.

I'll remember that next time a car pulls out right in front of me or a pedestrian steps off the curb ;) TBH I don't envisage me being drastically quicker on a road bike compared to my hybrid. Maybe 1 mph or so on average.

I'll try new pads before changing the brakes themselves. I guess part of the problem is the lack of leverage when on the hoods.

Yeah, leverage from the hoods is much less than from the drops, which is usually where your hands should be if you're going fast enough to be worrying about how quickly you can stop.

You may find you're surprised how much faster you are on a road bike than on a hybrid. I certainly was surprised coming from a crap old mountain bike when I started.

Tomorrow will tell, I'll do my usual route which in my prime ( ;) ) last summer I could do at an average of 17 mph but in my current lardy state is around 15 mph average on my hybrid.

My bibs have started to fall apart, bits of the pad broke apart in the wash.

Castelli Free Aero Race Bib Shorts - Kit Version SS14, just under a year old, maybe washed once a week max so 50 times...

Emailed Castelli to see if they do any repair or warranty work.

Might have to pony up for Rapha ones to replace them.... Now the classic bibs or the pro team... Classic can be returned within 30 days which would be good as I'd be M/L. Pro team I'd be L and they are $35 more...

15% off Rapha this weekend too if you enter whiteroads15 at the till. Maybe I should try whiteroads90 haha :D

Rapha pro are very very good bibs

Loads of people in the club have been readying their 'nice' bikes this week. So it sounds like it might be a bit painful today lol!

All dry outside, never know how much to wear though as it's probably colder than it looks. Been looking forward to this for a while!

So I need a new bike, had my boardman hybrid stolen a couple of days ago.

Thinking of going down the cycle plus (cycle2work) as this could potentially save me some money.

After a decent road bike now, any recommendations? (I'm 6' 2" if that helps)

How windy is too windy?

Got to go into work for a few hours today and thought I'd head out afterwards till i saw winds of 25mph with gusts no doubt even higher! Might have to settle with going out tomorrow morning when the winds are a more palatable 10 - 15mph!

that's really poor. one of my DHB bibs have probably been washed twice as often and apart from a dropped stitch on one of the leg grippers, they're fine

40-50mph winds and bucketing with rain in Scotland today. Turbo for me then sadly.

Looks marginally better tomorrow for our clubs first APR of the season.

I have 2 pairs of those castelli bibs for a couple of years now and still going strong, so sounds like just unlucky and got a crap pair. Or maybe something got snagged in the washing machine.

Have you tried Assos? I only ask as everyone I know that has tried both brands prefers Assos shorts. I do prefer Rapha jerseys though.

You were right Von :) Quite blowy out with a heavy headwind on some sections I'd normally sail through. Sort of ride where I'd be happy to average 14.5 > 15 mph on my hybrid. Averaged 17.5 mph

Bike rides well. Climbs much easier than my hybrid, much more so than I was expecting. Bit of chain rub so I limited myself to 8 speeds so I'll have a tweak with the limit screws. Hands and bum are sore (no padded shorts or gloves though) so I'll need to MTFU if I'm going to start doing longer rides on it.

Cracked shifter rattles slightly over rough roads which is annoying, if I'd spotted that before I'd have taken a replacement bike rather than vouchers. Stops when I put my finger on top though so I'm sure I can stop it permanently.

Oh and I decided to see how it rides out of the saddle on the last stretch home. Cue me weaving left and right with every turn of the pedals :o

I have, I found the pad to be quite large, a bit less padding would possibly be my preference. I do really like the grippy dots they use on the legs to hold in place rather than a solid gripper. They faded quite quickly and went grey though :(

The Castellis with the X2 pad were my favorite, but if they have a short lifespan then not very economical to buy!

Think 40-50mph gusts were the scariest for me, happily ride in 25 :D It's fine as long as it's not coming across you. Painful in your face or flying if it's behind you.

I've got a pair of the Assos S2 I think, and they are a good bib, but the legs just aren't long enough, they fit perfect everywhere, but they just don't come far enough down my thighs! Great bibs none the less, but always feel like I've got too much leg on show :D

First TT of the year today, and could not have asked for better weather. Bike is prepped up, although going to try to get another 20 psi in to my rear (160psi) :D So nice I'm going to ride the 11 miles out there, which I hardly ever do! Had to emergency wash my skinsuit as wasn't expecting it to be quite this warm and was hoping my new one would have turned up.

I found Assos to be very comfortable but the pad was a little too flexible and would climb right up my bum crack.

To much info? Sorry.

I prefer Castelli but I've not tried Rapha bibs. I've got their winter longs but they are padless.
