there is indeed a law.. but no one cares about it bar shops who have to fit the reflectors, good lights will win over high viz clothing and reflectors imo.

I expect the law is the kind of thing that would only come into play as a bolt on to something else. Like you ran a red light and hit someone and oh look, you didn't have pedal reflectors on your bike, better charge that as well.

I should legally have a bell, reflectors, and an Australian Standard helmet among other things, risk fines of $400+ without them. Up to now the local cops have seen sense.

I have lights and a helmet.

I've got 2 spare sets of SPD cleats so I could just sacrifice my current ones in an experiment seeing how long they'd stand up to being walked on all day!
I've got an old set of SPD's still sat on my old commuting shoes if you want some. Depends on the shoes too, I know my old XC30's had quite pronounced grips which really protected the cleat, doubt you'd wear them out with a CX/MTB style shoe. I've got 'cleat covers' for my SPD-SL's and they work very well, doubt they'd wear out in a day but multiple they probably would (and almost as expensive as a set of cleats!).
Lordrobs - have a look at the mountain bike type half-leg shorts that have a chamois and lycra shorts built in. Might be an option at least.
Baggy options too - less obvious they're for cycling, more casual!
What's peoples thoughts on shop fitted wheel, bar and saddle reflectors?
On road bikes they're generally not fitted, hybrid's they occasionally are. You can fit them and I think there is a law that they should be fitted, although similar to the law that dictates our pedals should have reflectors on, it's so outdated it's not generally followed and I highly doubt it's enforced. I've a friend who fitted some to his road bike, they look terrible! Cateye even do some white ones which contain a battery and light up!

budget around 1200

That's the 105, Carbon and Hydra RS785's, there are lesser models with Alu and lesser brakes/groupsets for less money. I've kept it in my wishlist as I figured being CX for wider clearance 28-32's tyres. Although no mudguard mounts (if he wants guards?!). If I don't go the more expensive route this is what I'd probably go for with P clips for fixed guards (Chromo's).

I think I can buy one of these and it will get me lower, just the design looks different, to the existing volcano style bearing cover.

I only want the bearing cap (but the bearing will be a spare) these have a height of 4mm according to bike24, my current one is 20mm!

Currently have a Cane Creek IS-3 which has been superseded by the IS41 I think.

1 1/8th top taper to 1 3/8th at the bottom integrated headset.

I think the law is that any new bike sold must have reflectors but there is no law to say you have to keep them on once you own the bike.

I heard something about some bike shops getting away with not supplying reflectors etc as they sell the bike without pedals... therefore it's not a full bike. My bike from an LBS didn't have any reflectors but if you look at places like Evans they always have those silly test pedals on.

Evans built up my new bike with M520 pedals on it and didn't bother with pedal reflectors. They had put a front white reflector, wheel reflectors and a bell on, though. I took those off pretty quick.

I fancy getting some new MTB gear so I could kill two birds with one stone. I currently have two pairs of cheap MTB with a non removable padded inner and they are pretty horrible as the pad doesn't sit tight against your body. Fine on the bike but it feels pretty weird walking around.

Garmin Connect and Strava often have a bit of a discrepancy when it comes to elevation but my ride on Friday is the worst I've seen. Garmin = 2405ft, Strava = 1119ft. Both set to corrected elevation as my Edge 200 doesn't have an altimeter.

Great setup but all FSA finishing kit (usually junk) and it's the wrong colour... :p

“Also, if you ride over something that causes an obvious bump or jerk to the handling of the bike, your tyre may have been damaged, even if you don’t suffer a puncture. Again, stop and check just to be safe.
I'd have to stop at least a couple of times a week, due to the road surfaces around here being terrible. I hardly ever hit pot holes but there are so many rough/broken surfaces/stretches and debris everywhere the chances of hitting something on a ride are quite high.

“If you do see a tear anywhere on the exposed surface of the tyre (tread or sidewall), inspect it thoroughly and try to see if the inner tube is visible. If so, the tyre is unsafe. If not, then the casing should still be intact and you can ride on, but get the tyre checked by your local dealer just to be sure.”
No inner tube visible, the casing/protection layer maybe, but not the inner tube! So ha! :p

Edit:
“If your tyre had a tread pattern, this will have disappeared and in extreme cases, you may even see the casing material showing through.“
Always knew I was an EXTREME rider! ;)

Leave work and it's raining/snowing...arrive home and it's bright sunshine outside. Sigh.

If it holds up (unlikely) I might head out later. Alternatively I might go out once it's dark to test my new 700 lumen Wiggle light.

Woke up this morning with a terrible cold and sore throat... I think the smattering of London snow at the end of my ride yesterday must have weakened me yesterday :p

It's been nice all day today though but I daren't try ride in this state! Typical..

Which 700 lumen did you go for? Volt?

About to commute home between hail showers... Fingers crossed!:rolleyes:
