really ?

hmm, my Garmin did pick it up via GPS on the way home, isn't it less accurate than the spokes?

Possibly but when you're riding 40-50 miles i'm sure a few missed plot points do not matter one jot. and doesn't pick up micro jumps of the wheel on bumpy roads so probably evens out!

Thanks - I think it would be fair to say it went better than I was hoping for :)

Weather was spot on in terms of temperature and sunshine, but the wind definitely played a big part! First 50 was with an almost perfect tailwind. As it stands I hold the KOM for a segment covering the first half of the route . Average of 21.7mph for 51.1 miles. That was also near enough solo, no drafting at all for that part. I suspect my position on the leaderboard might change when everyone uploads their rides, but still :D

The second half was a completely different story, it was more of a case of surviving against the headwind. Fortunately a guy who had been drafting me for some of the first half took some turns at the front, then a group of 3 caught up with us and kept us going. Overall brought it home at 5hr07 moving time for 98.6 miles, stopping for less than 6 minutes on top of that.

I'm not sure if my privacy settings on Strava will let everyone view this, but here's the link: https://www.strava.com/activities/562039476/. Just look at that elevation chart :D:D

Nice! Looks like good fun.

Strava uses your GPS for speed anyhow, even when you've got a speed sensor set up.

Which is why Strava always robs me of a little bit of avg speed compared to Garmin! :D

Had trouble sleeping last night so got only about 5 hours... feel so tired which sucks as the weather is really nice down here. 15C+ and blue skies. I might go out for a short slow ride but hoping to save some energy for a hilly ride tomorrow - rain forecast though. With any luck it's wrong!

Yeah. Strava pretty much is always 0.2-0.5 mph slower than Garmin Connect :)

How on earth is the weather so nice everywhere else? We've had rain on and off constantly for the past week.

I'm surprised this rain never hit us today. It was a massive patch of rain earlier but it's been really nice :)

Looks like the weather for the Tour de Yorkshire isn't amazing though.

I've got a bit of a tan from to today's ride, move to the SE. Thought I was doing pretty well keeping 26kph with 1700m climbing before seeing tl45's ride :o

Hey FT, I've seen a few of your rides and your average watts is usually pretty close to your weighted average, with mine they are always a fair bit different (178 vs 198 today). Any idea why?

It's been nice for about a week here. 17C today!

Spent the day recovering from work, so will be trying to get out from tomorrow. It will probably rain all week now :(

Consistent on the uphills and downhills rather than smashing it up the climbs I suspect. Or Flat rides.

Had my first ride out on 28mm tyres today, seemed pretty similar to my 25's. A little bit more compliant over rough roads and no noticeable difference in handling. Some of that could be accounted by the upgrade from Lithions to Pro4E. Was a short but pretty quick ride considering there were some headwinds along one stretch. https://www.strava.com/activities/562470976

Noticed my drive train was a little noisy and shifting wasn't quite as slick as normal. This was with a new cassette so before I started fiddling with the gears I thought I better check my chain. 0.75 dropped into about 80% of the links so it is only just worn but I guess the new cassette highlighted it. Only 1369 miles but I'm not sure if I can expect any more from a Sora chain?

I've actually never really looked into how weighted average works but lately I've mostly done flat rides and on the minor inclines/declines I do try to maintain similar power levels most of the time (rather than smash it or freewheel, respectively).

Basically if you burn matches your normalised/weighted soon goes up. Consistent steady constant pedalling keeps them the same.

On a flat tt I want the figure to be exactly the same ideally.

Ah, makes makes sense :)

I guess I often ride with a specific power target in mind so that would fit pretty well with what you're saying. Even when I'm not specifically looking at power all the time I'll usually set an "effort level" mentally whilst looking at power and then roll along at whatever that is. On solo rides at least.

Question!
I have claris 2400 groupset on my bike and recently got my hands on a 105 5600 groupset.

I have weighed the brakes, and swapped over to the 105 calipers, but as they brifters are 10 speed, left then alone for the moment as my claris is 8 speed.

However, the 105 set came with a hollow tech (2) type fsa gossamer cranks. Should I swap out the claris octa-link cranks with the fsa stuff?

Normally I would just do it and see what I liked best, but it means changing bottom bracket and I don't have a spare lying about!

What would you do?

The fsa cranks would be better than your Claris ones, but yeah, you'll need a fresh bottom bracket. A standard hollowtech ii bottom bracket should work as they're both 24mm spindle.

The chainset really isn't going to make much difference to your riding. The ratios might be a bit different, but for solo riding the compact is probably better anyway. If you don't actually want to do the work I'd avoid it tbh.

Naturally the brifters will be the biggest part of the upgrade. Do you have the mechs too? All you probably need in that case is a new chain and casette.

Yup, I have the mechs too. Just missing chain and casette. The left brifter does not seem to index, so going to take it apart, give it a clean and see what it does.

Cool, I shall order a BB in.

I did hope that was the case, I don't know if it is my imagination, but i swear they feel like they flex more than the hollow tech 2 stuff on all my MTBs. Does not seem to matter how tight I get them!

Also noticed when I put on a different front wheel now much smoother the bike feels. I think they schwalbe lugano tires need to go. The bike felt much better on these others!

ah ok, makes sense. Most of my rides are in hills so I can't keep a consistent power level. Looks like nothing to worry about.

Off to Vonhelmet and PhysicHull's stomping grounds in a bit. Going for my maiden voyage up Shaley and then cycling back home, tail between my legs :p

Tired legs and eating my body weight in cheese last night should make this interesting.
